I'm not sure, but in Monty Python's film Life of Brian, Eric Idle played a character who wanted to be called "Loretta" by the other men in his little anti-Roman activist sect.

:D

So that's 2000 years accounted for!

Over 2000 years! Read Dueteromony in the Bible.

Then remember that you are reading the Old Testament. Men sometimes tried to avoid having to be in the army by dressing as women, while women who wanted to fight dressed as men. Also, the Temple was divided by sexes. Men had to be on the main floor and take an active art, but women were upstairs and relatively inactive. Men often tried to dress like women so as to avoid having to be active in the service! Thus the rules set down by God. I am a Catholic and have been told by two Priests and an Archbishop that the rule mentioned in the Bible does not apply today!

It goes way, way, way back .... BC for sure.

Wikipedia says this:

In Greek mythology

* In punishment for his murder of Iphitus, Heracles/Hercules was given to Omphale as a slave. Many variants of this story say that she not only compelled him to do women's work, but compelled him to dress as a woman while her slave.

* Achilles dressed in women's clothing at the court of Lycomedes in order to speak to Ulysses.

* Athena often goes to the aid of people in the guise of men in The Odyssey.

In Norse myths and legends

* Thor dressed as Freyja in order to get Mjölnir back in Þrymskviða.

* Odin dressed as a female healer as part of his efforts to seduce Rindr.

* Loki transformed himself into a mare (thus crossdressing and making oneself look nonhuman) and in that form became the mother of Sleipnir. In Lokasenna, he and Odin taunt each other with having taken on women's forms, bearing babies and nursing them, but the further details of myths behind those taunts have not survived.

* Hagbard in the Scandinavian legend of Hagbard and Signy (the Romeo and Juliet of the Vikings). After having slain Signy's brothers and suitors, Hagbard was no longer welcome in the hall of Signy's father Sigar. Hagbard then dressed up as one of his brother Haki's shieldmaidens in order to have access to the chambers of his beloved. When the handmaidens washed his legs, they asked him why they were so furry and why his hands were so calloused. Because of this, he invented a clever verse to explain his strange appearance. Signy, however, who understood that it was Hagbard who had come to see her, explained to the maidens that his verse was truthful.

* Frotho 1st dressed as a shieldmaiden in one of his eastern campaigns.

* Hervor from Hervarar saga. When Hervor learnt that her father had been the infamous Swedish berserker Angantyr, she dressed as a man, called herself Hjörvard and lived for a long time as a Viking.

It goes way back before computers were invented, when we had to post threads on stone slabs, & picture threads were painted on cave walls ha ha.

So Ugh comes into the cave, and sees Uumba. "Say, isn't that Uumbatta's Bearskin your wearing?" "You're not supposed to do that, it's perverted for you to wear her bearskin!" "She can wear your leopardskin, but you can't put on her stuff...it's anti Neanderthal!" "Next thing you know, you'll be so wrapped up with your bearskin fetish, you won't even want to go out and club Dinosaurs to death." "Man, I'm really worried about you." "I'm not even sure if your a caveman anymore!"

That's how far back it goes.

Peace and Love, Joanie

In the 19th and early 20th century, it was common for boys up to six years old to dress in girls clothes amongst the working people. The reason for this I believe was because it was far cheaper to make a smock dress than a pair of trousers and shirt etc,. I remember seeing a photograph that an Auntie of mine showed me of a lovely curly blond haired girl, she then asked me who I thought it was, I assumed it was her, but no it was my Father!
Where I grew up in the South West of England (Devon) I remember as a boy seeing old farmers wearing smocks and gaiters, which today would be considered a dress (I have one) with boots (Yes I have boots as well) the only difference I am not an old farmer! Love and everything, Lesley Ann

OT - that's the funniest way anyone has worded it but I think you're right!

Even basic BC Egypt history men wore make up, long gowns, long hair and many times took herbs for breasts to show as a ruler, they were fit to rule all people and holdings.

I have heard that man did not start wearing 'pants' until they started riding horses, as the horse hide was rough on the bare legs. Do not know if this is accurate, but it makes sense, and the movies of the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, etc., always show men in some type of dress or skirt. Just like us.

I believe that you are correct, I have seen those old photos to when boys and girls dressed alike until a certain age.

Certain Roman Emperors crossdressed, replete with makeup and wigs---Caligula would dress as the Goddesses Athena and Venus--and guess what---no one dared give her a hard time about it---the lions in those days were hungry

how far back dose crossdressing go back in time?

We have been part of history for a very long time. In fact, we (crossdressers) are an important part of the history of France. Read this amazing piece of history here:

There once was a governor of New York who was a transvestite. His name was Lord Cornbury, and he served from 1702 to 1708. A favorite of the Queen, he appeared at public ceremonies in full drag, wearing a dress, silk stockings, and an elaborate hairdo. He let his nails grow long and donned high heeled boots. He remaied governor for six years until the American colonist, outraged by his behavior, finally forced a recall.
