Knowing that we come from different walks of life (I'm still perfecting my fem wiggle :battingeyelashes:) I am curious about what other members do to put bread on the table. No company names or other identifying information needed, just a general description of your occupation. Titles are OK for this.

I'll start. I have been involved in the automotive industry for most of my career, from dealer sales (forgive me, but I hadda eat), factory rep, and lastly as a warranty specialist for an automotive supplier. I took a buyout package last Fall and am currently looking for work. I'd like to find an occupation more appropriate to my current lifestyle, although that's a tall order for the area where I live. Automotive is still pretty much a man's world, which is why I could not CD as much as I would have liked.

I to am a Engineer for a auto company and we have lots of women working here and they very diverse. I could probably go full dress, with the company having no problem. But my co-workers would be another story.....:)

Semi-Truck Driver

I can't explain why, but this is one job that I've always dreamed of. Having absolutely no idea about it, I always looked at it in the romantic sense, you know, the open road, seeing the country, etc.

Oh -- what the heck Amy, go ahead and tell me that I've got it all wrong

Computer analyst. That's not my job title, nor a particular description of my present job duties: more like a career description.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but these questions about jobs/ work / career come up from semi-regularly. Could someone suggest a good appropriate tag we could start using for these threads?

Amy,

I'm considering getting into truck driving myself. I used to drive a 10 wheeler with a screamin' 6V71 and 13 speed Road Ranger in one of my past lives. Never drove an 18 wheeler except around a parking lot once. Do you drive dressed? Seems that would be a little bit dangerous since trucking is still full of macho types (nothing against them, I can guzzle beer, belch, f@rt and scratch myself with the best 'em), despite the fairly large numbers of lady truckers out there. And I do recall a particular episode of Cops several years ago where a CD trucker was pulled over for some infraction and was instantly outed to the whole world. I really felt sorry for that individual.

How 'bout "Occupation Survey"? Maybe admin could make it a sticky so it doesn't keep popping up when it comes to someone's mind.

To begin long long ago in a state far far away, my first job was pin-setter, an obselete and long-gone job now, I was 13. My mom and stepdad ran the bowling alley. I also refinished pins and acted as foul judge. No electronics in them there days.

When I was 15 I started work in a grocery store, and was soon doing the closing jobs of an assistant manager but due to my age they wouldn't give me the job.

In 1953 worked as a bookkeeper for a home improvement contractor. Then for SP Transport in the accounting dept, and took on the personnel files later in addition.

In 1955 my first engineering job. I was working in the placement center at the Univ of Houston and referred myself to several jobs. One was also running the lights and sound for the Houston Club at night, a fun \job.

I was doing drafting, bookkeeping and secretarial work for the small engr. firm I referred myself to The owner became a life long friend. Due to bad times I left there and went to an Aluminum Foundry and Production co. I designed and drew up the dies for making extrusions and was also in charge of all construction design and building under the chief engineer.

Left there after 2 years and went to work at Monsanto in Texas City in the Plant Engineering Dept. Was there for 4 years. Basically designed and drew plans for electrical and instrumentation projects.
Also had my own business building electrical control panels for industry, and my own designed alarm units and annunciator systems.

Left there in 1964 for a one-man engineering firm in Houston Tx. Doing electrical, plumbing and mechanical engineering for mainly schools but also other types of projects. Was in charge of the works under the owner.
Expanded to 2 more employees, under me.

Left there in 1970 and moved to California where I was a designer and inspector for modular buildings for the US Navy. After that to a company in Stockton that was a contractor doing general (not much), electrical, air conditioning, fire sprinkler, and plumbing contracts. Had a dual hat as sheet metal designer, and consulting engineer for the other departments, later followed by becoming the Division Manager for the Electrical Division.

Left them to start my own engineering firm in Modesto, but worked after a year for mainly two firms, one in Sacramento and one in Modesto. Also a stint as a consultant for the Stockton Waste Water Plant and San Francisco Unfinished Airport.

In the 70's I obtained a Real Estate Broker's License in California and also a Personal Property ((Loan Shark)) Broker's License. Still have an active RE Broker License.

1989, moved to Las Vegas and began teaching music of all instruments to students from 5 to 99.
Was fired in Sept 2007 because two people complained I said I was transgendered and was (HORRORS) wearing a wig and a skirt. Legal action is pending.

I have written enough specifications to fill a 20foot shelf for various jobs. Along the way I have published and written 6 songs and 5 poems. Two of which were featured on page one of the books they were included in.

If anyone has a job opening please email me.

Tommi,
I remember that episode of cops that you are talking about. The only thing I wonder is why did he sign the release? In order for it to shown, every party involved has to sign a release.

My occupation is in the hotel industry.

If it's possible I'd like to see this thread turned into an ongoing survey. I've met a lot of CDs and I've formed a theory about the majority of the occupations - not scientific but anecdotal.

I'm an electrical eng by education and technician (not my job title - I just use the term to generalize my focus) by career and pre-disposition. I've met a lot of CD engineers, a handful of airline pilots and quite a few other types of technical folks (IT, software, etc.)

My theory is that there is something about the way our brain is wired that tends to drive many CDs into technical fields.

Of course, I realize that many occupations are represented here so I don't meant o over generalize...still it would be nice to take the occupations listed so far and make a survey so we can see if there is any trend - just out of curiosity...:-)

Susan, I was thinking the same thing. This thread needs to be a "sticky".

When I started it I had just joined the forum and had returned to CDing after many years of dormancy. I was looking for validation that I was NOT what society says we are, namely a filthy pervert, latent child rapist or whatever else they tend to heap on us. The thread has achieved it's purpose for my self-validation, but I hope it lives on so that others who went through the same journey I did can see that they aren't alone, that they are perfectly normal people who have a great gift.

As far as the number crunching goes, I intend to do that soon, just to see what the occupational trend is for us. I think you're right about tech fields being overwhelmingly represented here. The why of it is yet another question; perhaps it has to with the fact that we deal with cold, hard facts, cold, hard bits and pieces and need some warm softness to balance our lives?

Hi BobbiAnne! It looks like we have several "lady" truckers here, a fact I found a bit of a surprise when I started this thread. I'm considering taking up driving as a second career. I've been out of work since last Fall when I took a buyout from my last employer. Since then I've not found work in my chosen industry, auto manufacturing, hence my interest. I drove years ago, so I have some experience. Never drove an 18, but my regular ride was a 10 wheeler with a Detroit 6V71 and a 13 speed Road Ranger. I'd be interested in hearing your experiences as a "lady" trucker as I would like to continue CDing. If you've a mind to please PM me; if not that's OK, too. :o

Tommi and Susan. I would love to see some research examining, and comparing, the education and experience histories of the CD population. However, we have to be careful about making too many generalizations from the responses on this forum. I suspect the relatively high number of engineering and technical types may be due to the fact that we are ALL, on this forum, pretty comfortable with computers. Perhaps, if we could communicate with the CD population that is not computer literate, we might see a different range of professions. Having said that, I love this thread. It really is fascinating to see the spectrum of individuals represented here.

It may just be a generalization but It always seems to me that those that work in Computers and Technology seem to be a bit more excepting as a whole of alternet lifestyles, personalities, and most everything else.

I do agree with VtVicky in that we see a bit better turn out of the Computer and Technology savey people here being it a forum and all. It would be an intresting thing to do a full study on the subject, and see where we all come from.
