Holy crap!! I haven't flow since they started adding all these extra charges so was I in shock when I walked up to the ticket counter and saw the sign... $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second... And $125 for any bag over 50 pounds!!! Damn!! I'm always over weight... All that makeup ... breast forms, shoes.... ya know!! .
So since I had two bags I broke them open and starter rearanging things right there in line... The lady next to me was staring at my clear case full of wigs and my pink pokatoded makeup case!! Lol. Hey... Make you a good deal on a couple pair of male jeans? Hahahaha
So I get up there and start the electronic checkin.. Put in your credit card for ID purposes.. The answer a bunch of stuff.. Then up pops this... "Would you like to buy additional leg room for $49?". Wtf?? Why are my legs that long? Or are the seats shoved together?? NO!!! Then I finish and select 2 bags .... Put in the credit card again to pay for them.. $40.. And pop them on the scale.. First on 33 pounds.. Second one 54 pounds.. Crap!! So I'm getting ready to tear them apart again when the clerks says.. "I got ya covered, Close enough". Really? Yeah! What a nice lady!!
And I had cut my makeup in half from normal and only a fraction of my jewelry.. 3 pair of shoes... One purse.. Couple dresses.. Skirts, tops, jacket... Lingerie... 10 wigs!!! Hahaha.
Well I guess the price of my hobby increased but hey... Small price to pay!! :). I

i've learned the trick of "one carry-on bag and one personal bag are allowed." you'd be amazed what you can get into carry-on these days. you just gotta smile and be nice. the personal bag doesn't have to be a small handbag, either. put the heavy stuff in carry-on, and check the light stuff. i know it's backwards, but it saves you money.

You could lighten the weight of each of your pieces of luggage if you didn't pack your stuff and wore it on the plane!!!! LOL! Since the lady in line behind you saw what was inside, why hide the obvious.

Try mailing your bags ahead when you can -- it's cheaper, easier, and you're much less likely to have it lost by the airlines.

Oh Karren. You should have just carried on wigs and breast forms and bought everything else there. Then wear it all home. Dump the male stuff in the trash and have a great time. sorry, forgot the ID stuff, never mind...

Kee-ripes!
$125 for one overweight bag!
I have never ever travelled with a suitcase any less than 50 pounds. Probably my penchant for buying lots of books wherever i go.
Guess I'll have to start doing that shipping ahead thing!

Well since I'm meeting coworkers enroute dressing wasn't an option and they checked my ID many many times... But made it to Denver now waiting for my connection...
I had a great time on the flight to Denver, chatting with the girl setting next to me.. She noticed I was reading In-Style magazine (along with Sky and telescope and Coal Mining... Lol). She loves makeup and fashion too!! :):):)

I think the only traveller with more stuff than a CD'er is a SCUBA diver. We always are to the max with baggage when diving. Guess I'll never be able to mix CD'ing and diving on the same trip!

Too bad abot the coworker part, I'd fly as Sandra. In Texas we can get an ID along with our DL. If for some reason I couldn't get the ID, I think I would go and get the DL as Sandra. I'd check into the second carry on bag.

I'm flying to Souix Falls via Minneapolis on the Sept 7th. MY wife suggested that I mail my clothes to My mothers house and just bring my carry on bag on the aircraft. I believe I'll be making this trip more frequently as my mother is 91 now. I'll need to keep a few things there as I may have to go there to moms house on short notice.:)

ROFL - Welcome to MY world Karen!
By the way, if you fly Delta enough to get "elite" status with their frequent flier program, you can check THREE bags AND your allowed to have them up to 75Lbs. And to think my travel coordinator has not idea why I like Delta so much! lol

I have not flown in like 12 years. I don't remember extra fees for anything.

Karen-
Welcome to air travel in the new millennium. You should consider carrying a purse full of dollar bills because all of those little amenities that use to be free will now cost a couple of bucks each.
Coming soon, $20.00 cover charge just board the aircraft and that doesn’t include pillows, blankets, magazines, a tray table that works, seats with arm rests and of course emergency oxygen should the need arise. It ain’t cheap to fly nowadays.
Hey, you could always Fed Ex your stuff. It’ll probably get there before your checked bags will anyway.

It just keeps getting better and better... Hahahaha
So waiting in Denver I bump into and old buddy and we chatted for a while and parted company.. At the gate this guy wanders up to me and says "are you with the company and going to Wyoming?". One of the coworkers from a different division that knew me but I didn't know him..
So last minute they change departing gates on us.. And when I board the plane my assigned seat doesn't exist.. Obviously they changed planes to... And guess what.. When I arrive in sheradin... No Friggin bags!! Hahaha. This trip is doomed!!
So here I set.. NOT all dress and definately no place to go!!! Ohh well... Maybe I'll take a walk.. Its only 102 degrees out!! :):):)
If someone finds my clothes they better not touch my makeup!! Or I'll kick their ass!!! Hahahaha

What airline were you on?
I flew just two weeks ago (Northwest). It all starts with the fuel surcharge... then the baggage fee... and now NW charges you $5.00 for a 'snack box' of peanuts and a few other things. The only things still free is the water/soda/coffee.
I also just read about another airline that is 'selling' pillows or blankets now.
We never check baggage if we can at all help it. We just finished a 10 day vacation with nothing but two carry on bags, her purse and my laptop bag. Of course, there was no room for "Cristi" except for the usual underthings and a night gown. We were considering doing the 'mail ahead' thing but finally managed to fit everything into the small bags.
Then, of course, there were the delays. 3.5 hours late just getting out of the first airport, which meant of course that we missed our connection and had to spend a memorable time (barely 5.5 hours to try to catch some sleep) at a no-name hotel before catching a 7:15 flight the next morning. :( :( We were glad then that we hadn't checked our bags, since we at least had our personal items while other people we met on the ordeal didn't have a toothbrush, something to sleep in, a change of clothes... anything!
In two weeks, I'm flying again but am going to combine some mountain biking with a conference, so WILL have to be checking a bag so I can take along all my MTB stuff (shoes, helmet, camelbak, a few sets of shorts/shirts, pedals...) Maybe I'll be able to fit some "Cristi" things into that overflow bag. :)
Flying just isn't any fun anymore.

My wife and I are flying from LAX to Maine next month to visit with some friends (a CD'ing couple who used to live here in So Cal) we haven't seen in years. It would be easy to just send it all ahead but [un]fortunately dressing isn't in the plans, at least not THIS time. I told the wife she owes me, BIG TIME ! ! ! (I won't go into all the gory details). We're going to try to keep it to 2 carry-ons. Worst-case scenario we'll have 1 checked bag.

Ok, I am NOT shilling for anyone, I promise, but I can't resist putting in my $.02 on this airline surcharge topic....
My gf works for Southwest Airlines and they have resisted this whole a la carte surcharge frenzy (their latest media blitz is all about this). My gf says she and her SWA colleagues have been over-run by fed-up passenger refugees from other airlines.
True, SWA doesn't fly everywhere, but check them out if you are looking to save a couple bucks to spend on something more important, like makeup.
*giggle*
Sorry it introduce a sensible note (I know, what was I thinking?) but it just sounds as if airlines in the States are just catching up with the rest of the world as regards restrictions and surcharges. Welcome to the 21st century.
The joke in the UK is that if we have any more security 'scares', passengers will only be allowed on board naked and in handcuffs. And forget about luggage. Far too dangerous.
Happy trails.

Hi Traci,
The only reason Southwest has been able to "resist" Is their fuel hedges which BTW everyone else is doing now. But they be right there, along with everyone else, charging more when their hedges run out!

I can't believe all of this crap I am reading about flying. I flew the last time in 1990 and it was nothing like what is going on now. I am glad that I do not have to fly anymore. When I did fly it was job related but that is behind me now as I retired last year. I feel so fortunate!! I would rather stay at home and be myself having fun!!!

I don't mind paying the extra bag surcharge because I understand the airlines need to make money somehow to stay in business... But I draw the line at having to find quarters for the pay toilets... :D
