Hello all,

I'm wearing a 36A.
Ironically the cups seem smaller than my "36 nearly A". One of my dreams is to find a bra with a cup size smaller than either, like a 36AAA. I was surprised that I seem to be the only one who wants a bra with flat cups. But that is another topic.

Regards,

Matthew

I love to wear flat bras - I wear a 38A - I haven't been able to get a smaller cup than A in a bra that size in the UK. I did get a lovely stretchy un-wired pink bra in Contessa last week - the max size they did was a 36B, which the assistant said would easily stretch to a 38, and would then reduce the cup size to A - which it does, and bing unwired it's so comfy and sexy - I love it!

you must remember that Bras are supposed to be unhealthy for us girls as biologically are frames are male. I had my bras fitted proffessionally and I was told to take your natural chest size and then decide what size cup you need depending on how big a bust is needed. so if you are a 38" chest then go for a size 38 bra and for good effect get a C cup. If you are use a good quality prosthesis then you can step down one size in the cup to imitate a cleavage. best of all no aches. I wear a bra all the time no matter what I am wearing and I love it and so do my friends

Well, it varies by style. Most of the time I wear a 40-42B, naturally. But there are some Bali bras that fit me at 38B fpretty well. For the larger look I have a 38DD that I can fill out with assistance. And I always like to have an underwire.

I have two (bras).
But I have to find something to put into them or else I wear a no-cup size.
So, a 38" strap fits around my chest, but if I want to have a bust line, I put some pads into it, or I may try to buy some forms.

Want to see some pictures?
Here are some with and without pads and with and without straps.

Quite apt as today there was a double page spread in a newspaper here about supposedly the most favourite bra in the world (The Doreen), they say it isn't the best looking bra but here's a link to the story and below the article as the link will probably be obsolete as the new edition is printed.

Doreen: The bra that conquered the world

It's not modern - and it's certainly not sexy. But unlikely as it seems, this prosaically named style is a global best-seller. Stephanie King finds out what lifts and separates it from the competition

02 June 2005

It's boom and bust in the lingerie world; boom time because, according to market research company Mintel's retail lingerie report, between 1998 and 2004 UK retail sales of women's bras and pants are estimated to have grown by 34 per cent to £1.14bn. And bust because chest sizes are on the up. Yesterday a German gynaecologist, Thomas Gent, issued a health warning on skimpy knickers, blaming thongs for many genital irritations. And while big pants may become the new wave, big bras have secretly been the mainstay.

Hard to believe if you follow lingerie ads - those pert-figured women in sporty, cute or coquettish undies - but the world's best-selling bra is far from itsy bitsy: it's an average size 36D. And you won't find it splashed on billboards. Its manufacturer is reluctant to even mention its home-baked name - Doreen.

In the world of spin there is a reverse psychology that zero access to a person or product creates mystery and intrigue; resulting in hype and subsequent hefty column inches. As far as Triumph - makers of Doreen - are concerned, they genuinely don't want to talk about Doreen and the last thing they want is coverage of any kind. "We're part of an international set-up and we've been told not to get involved with anything to do with Doreen because we're doing so much work in a younger and more fashionable market at the moment. That's the directive we've been given," relays Triumph's sales and marketing manager Tony Jarvis.

But best-selling bra in the world? That's a pretty impressive mantle not to want to shout about. And already intrigue has set in. What is this globally dominant bra like and just who is buying it in such copious quantities?

Online retailer Figleaves has started selling the Doreen and went on a mission to find Doreen wearers in a national call-out, via regional newspapers. They offered a free Doreen bra to Doreen wearers who were themselves actually called Doreen.

Within a week, 50 Doreens (with passport proof of their name) had contacted Figleaves. And it turns out that the Doreen Massive is the baby boomers aged late 50s and up, which came as no surprise to Figleaves' buyer, Clare Turner, who has 18 years experience in the lingerie trade.

"If you mention the Triumph Doreen to any bra specialist, be it in M&S, John Lewis or an independent shop, they'll know exactly what you are talking about," says Turner. It's the equivalent of the Kenwood of mixers or the Hoover of Hoovers - the Dyson would be too mod-con. And for a generation that was brought up to be brand loyal, Doreen is the bra that hoists and holds in place an ample chest without lacerating the shoulder.

"I've worn the Doreen for 10 or 15 years," affirms 58-year-old retiree and grandmother Doreen Whittaker from Darlington. "I'm a lifelong weight-watcher, so my chest can go from a 36 to a 40E and every time I get fitted the assistant always brings me the Doreen. It's very comfortable and the straps don't dig in. And once you've found something that fits you well, you stick with it."

Doreen Gould, a market researcher from Edgware, is another Doreen loyalist. "I've been wearing the Doreen for 20 years. I didn't just buy it because it's my name - it's truly a good bra. It washes nicely, the straps are comfy and it keeps its shape which is important if you're big."

"With lingerie, people tend to be creatures of habit," says Turner. "And this generation is used to that original Fifties style, although the Doreen was brought out in 1967. It does the most amazing uplift job and the three-seamed cup automatically allows more volume in the bust space. The extra seam makes all the difference. It's like a couture dress - the more seams you have the more opportunity you have to shape the body."

However, if we're calling a spade a spade, the Doreen looks more safety harness than fancifully intricate couture creation. "It's because it doesn't have an underwire," says Turner of Doreen's ungainly appearance - heavyweight straps, wide wingspan and serious structural surrounding seams; all vital to its function of providing support.

The Doreen is a cross-your-heart style bra but without the warhead missile cups that used to be around in the Sixties. "Now they're more rounded like melons," says Turner, adding more seriously: "A lot of development work in terms of the fabric and construction has gone into the Doreen. The front section is rigid so it's not going to allow the chest to jump about and the 'modulus' in the wingspan is strictly controlled so that it will really support the back and therefore help balance the front. There's so much engineering gone into the bra to allow it to provide comfort and support, and to fit a huge spectrum of people." Turner says she remembers a similar-shaped bra being one of the best-selling styles at M&S when she worked there.

Doreen isn't attractive to look at. It's the equivalent of Bridget Jones' huge pants - not exactly the sort of thing you'd plump for when trying to look sexy or alluring in a state of near undress. "That's why Triumph don't want to talk about it," says Turner. "They've been trying to update their image for the past 20 years and if they keep talking about the Doreen, the younger generation won't buy from them."

While most established underwear companies are ditching this older bra style for fear of looking too dowdy in the race to latch on to the coat-tails of the recent fashion-led undies explosion, they're actually missing out on a lucrative market. Triumph on the other hand are savvily having their fruit scone and eating it. While trumpeting their new fashion focus they are continuing (albeit covertly) to produce a bra that few others still make and for an audience that is far from waning.

"People are getting older and living longer and if you look at the lingerie market split by age I think the biggest part of it is something like 55 to 65," says Turner - a fact backed by Mintel's report which targets the 55-64 age bracket as a growth opportunity in lingerie and an age segment estimated to grow 11 per cent by 2007.

Plus it makes sense for Figleaves to bring the Doreen onboard and online because, as Turner says: "So many people like my mother-in-law who is retired, are computer literate; she's buying from John Lewis all the time on the internet, so why shouldn't she buy things like this as well."

John Lewis, incidentally, is testament to the projected growth in the Doreen market. Their sales figures - Doreen is one of the chain's best-selling bras - show sales of the Doreen up 10 per cent on last year. "I personally think, of the support bras, Doreen is the best," says John Lewis Edinburgh's lingerie fitter, Muriel Hynds. "The Doreen is good for elderly ladies - they don't like the wires; also for pregnant ladies who are a bit larger as well. And I fitted the Doreen on a lady this morning who'd had a mastectomy - it's very good at holding the prosthesis in."

Hynds admits that it's not the sort of bra that younger women go for. "But people will always be having babies, won't they, and the Doreen is great for them because it's so comfortable," says Hynds. And Figleaves are ****-a-hoop about bringing the Doreen aboard their younger, label-led website. "Whether you're six months pregnant, or a 60-year-old wanting your Triumph Doreen, or you want the new, young, funky thing, we can give you it," says Figleaves' chief executive Michael Ross. "Selfridges is increasingly very sexy and M&S very basic and we're saying we're here and appealing to everyone."

Homing in on the grey pound is a canny move on Figleaves' part but it's not just the baby boomers that are well-endowed. In all Hynds' years as a bra fitter, she says increased bust size is the marked change. "Five or 10 years ago it would have been 34 and 36B, now my regular fittings are more like 34DD and 36D. Even on young girls; I fit 10 and 11-year-olds in D cups."

Turner agrees with Hynds. She cites three recent developments in lingerie retailing. "The introduction of Lycra, fashion lingerie, and the third and most obvious change is the larger chest size," says Turner. "I don't know whether people are just more aware of their sizes and getting fitted properly but shapes have changed and smaller backs with larger cup sizes is the growing trend." In fact, of Figleaves' 220 brands which account for a stonking 4,000 products and 37,000 individual items (although the stronghold is cutesy designer labels) the best-selling bra is a larger size brand, which is why Turner says: "The larger chest size is definitely a side we're going to develop."

This is in line with Mintel's report which states that bust sizes are on the up. Statistics from 1,018 women aged 15-plus also showed that the increased chest size appears in younger consumers as well as older and is not limited to those who are overweight.

As a result, Mintel acknowledges that although large sizes aren't regarded by retailers as especially attractive to display, they are becoming increasingly important, which is why manufacturers are looking into not only increasing their size ranges - the average bra only has 36 size options whereas Doreen has 67, going up to a 46J - they are also trying to make them more aesthetically appealing.

With the change in generations and younger people looking for bigger cup sizes, Turner says that if this market is to be targeted properly they'll have to source more feminine styles.

Turner and Hynds both agree that unfortunately there's no getting away from wide bra straps for those ample (or "blessed" as some would say) of chest because "they are needed for support". But manufacturers are responding to this new younger market that wouldn't look twice at a boulder-holding Doreen.

"Twin rouleaux straps with two spaghetti straps instead of one," is Turner's suggestion for those looking for a less-hefty strap look. "If you want really fancy go to Rigby &Peller; for something quite sexy, try Freya and Fantasie does pretty but simple," says Turner (confiding that all three makes are from one parent company) when relaying her choice of good-looking bras for the bigger bust.

So while the picket-fence, post-war optimists, who will be around for some time, are loyally buying into their beloved Doreen, the good news for those abundant of bust and under 50 is that when it comes to bras, German shot-putter style is definitely not the last word.

"modern bra" allows some wiggle room for the many many urban legends about this. I heard that it all began when a debutante, rebelling against the corset, cut the bra part off and just wore that. But I can't find much supporting detail for that.

I can't buy a bra to fit. my chest is too wide, so a bra that fits my chest band size has the cups too close together.

the only way I can get a fit is to buy (or adapt) a front clasp bra and fit a 2" extender. perfect every time. and that way I can wear a 38A that fits nicely. (difficult to get an A-cup larger than a 38.)

I wear a 36D bra for my size 7 transform triangle breast forms. But depending on the brand, I may wear a 38D. I'm not all that big, only 5'7 and 135lbs., but really feel most natural with full breasts, as all the women in my family have. My absolute favorite bra is the Bali Lace 'N Smooth Seamless Underwire, I've it in both black and white. Although I usually wear my forms attached (with Hollister adhesive), I still wear a bra - not to keep my forms in place, but to support them. You know, wearing a bra for their intended purpose! Can't really say enough how wonderful it is to put on this bra with my forms firmly attached and in place!!! Next to putting on my lipstick, it's the most sensual and completely feminine thing I have experienced. It would take the participation of a man to top it!

HI All: When I was 14yo I tried on my sisters black lacecup underwire Vasserette bra, and it fit me like I had been fitted for it. I was changed for ever in an instant. Now I wear a 42C without forms. I can fill the cups, but I buy full coverage minimizer styles.
The significance of this is the cups R less full for the diameter of the underwire. I adore Wacoal and Goddess bras, always wear a LLPG with them and now I wear a cami or slip over my bra to help hide it, and my huge nipples that get so hard from the stimulation of the lace cups. My fav colors R black and nude, but no white ever. I think that wearing a bra stimulates growth, also I think it reshapes U, and I drink a lot of milk and the hormones also contribute to breast growth.

i wear a 36 b bra, it feels just right in proportion to my back and waist. This is my favorite bra, its a gossard multiway and seems hold my forms perfectly and give me a little cleavage.
i prefer to stay within reasonable boundries of bust size, and have a smaller more discreet pair of forms, an A cup size, which i find is a more elegant size when wearing figure hugging dresses.
A lot of the art in wearing a bra convincingly is the position of it on your chest, many new t-girls wear the bra and forms far to high on their chests and can look a bit out of proportion. the trick is to reduce the distance between your bust and your hips (like a real girl's anatomy) to acheive a more feminine shape.
Like most of us, i find putting on my bra is always the most sensual part of dressing, i try to put the bra on in as feminine way as possible having studied my ex's movements and adjustments, then everything feels right!

I have 2 bras that are a very comfortable 42b and usually wear all day(but not at the same time. I'm sure there people out there that do).
I also have a 40c that is equally comfortable but a different brand. I wonder if there are slight size differences among bra manufacturers as there are in shoes and clothing?

Hello all,

I'm wearing a 36A.
Ironically the cups seem smaller than my "36 nearly A". One of my dreams is to find a bra with a cup size smaller than either, like a 36AAA. I was surprised that I seem to be the only one who wants a bra with flat cups. But that is another topic.

Regards,

Matthew

Mathew,

You could probably wear a 36B or maybe even a C. When I put my bra on, I push my breast tissue forward and that fills out the cups. The bra holds it there quite well if you wear an under wire bra. I usually buy seamless bras that have a little strech in the cups. They usually fit better.

I wear either a 34C or 36C.

36 A or B depending on the bra. Perfer the B as I am trying to enlarge my breasts. I have been ussing a vacuum cleanner and Funnels on my breasts twice daily to enlarge them. It seems to be working. Lasts a few hours. Love natural breasts.

Has anyone else tried to make their breasts Larger?

I read somewhere that you can work out your bra size by measuring your chest just below your boobs, then adding 2 inches for each cup size. With my 36 inch chest, I should be 38A or 40B. Trouble is, I already bought several 36 and 38 Bs, some padded, some not, so I will have to wear them out before treating myself to some new ones, preferably in sets with matching thongs or panties.
I wear a bra to work every day now, but haven't come out there yet, so I wear unpadded bras without forms. I long to come out there so I can maybe eventually go in full femme. I would also love to have real tits so I don't have to wear forms; oh well, maybe one day.

From what I have read, your suppose to take your chest measurement and then add 4" and that is your bra size. Your cup size is your bra size + 1 = A, + 2 = B, + 3 = C, + 4 = D.

My chest size is 36, that would make me a 40C, but a 38C is very comfy.

I have question for you GG's out there. As for your bra size, do you go by the chart or how it feels when you are wearing it. The chart says I should be a 40-42C, but when I put one one, it's real loose, even with pads. When I put on a 38C, it fits nicely and my pads fill it out nicely.

I have been applying progesterone cream to my breasts and derriere three times daily and taking thr of the following three times daily: Dong Quai, Black Cohash, and Phyto Estrogen supplements. These are herbals and have produced some swelling and tenderness in my two ladies. I fill a 42B to where the cups are smooth but not bursting. I've thought of getting premarin over the net for some added filling, but for now I'm pleased as punch!! When my boy friend caresses me, it is so exciting.......

I have been buying 38c bras for years. I arrived at that size by trying on my wife's bras and because I'm so thick-chested, with a lot of chest flesh, I can usually naturally fill out my 38c bras. I have had some fashion forms silicone enhancers for years that I use when I need a little extra shape. Really big breasts look ridiculous on my frame and I'm pretty happy with my own. I recently bought some Maidenform 38b bras because I loved the style and couldn't get the C cups. The B cups would be great if the side band was a little wider-just gotta lose that 20 pounds girls!! later, Olivia

this is the new Maidenform bra i bought:

Hey, I'm embarrased by that "farmer's tan", lol. That pic was taken before my current tanning craze. That farmer's tan is almost completely blended in now and makes me feel great! O

why hun? I wear a 34b when I wear certain dresses or blouses, I prefer the 36c which I feel is a more appropriate size but I notice how nice the smaller breasts are for style especially if my waist is tight and I protude the hourglass look

I have had some breast forms for years which finally burst, so I just had to slurge on replacements, but regret being persuaded by the sales chart that I needed size 'c' which set me back £100, and they are shiny so they glint through any lace, and are a real put off. I had hope to try to using adhesives, but even though I am biggish they just look wrong. Then I found size 'B' on Ebay at half the price and they are perfect: not shiny, will stay on for hours oh and they are French...oo la la.

I usualy wear a 36b, but I use bra extenders I like slightly small cup size that a 36 or a 34 bra has as opposed to a 38 that would be my real size.

Hi Girls,

I wear 2 sizes of bras. I wear a 40B under my clothes durring the day with silicone pads, just enough weight to feel like I have small sexy breasts. I wear sheer demi bras and lacy bras.

At night I wear a 40DD bra full cups wide straps sexy cups. My wife wears a 38D
I love sexy full cup bras and longlines.
