I wanted to inquire about HRT. After you meet with a therapist, do you go to the endocrinologist? or does the therapist prescribe HRT? How long does it take for you to get on HRT from the first appointment with your gender therapist?

My first session with my last therapist took place in November '06. My initial appointment, on receipt of the "magic" TS diagnostic letter, with my endocrinologist was early January. I then had numerous blood tests performed (other medical considerations had to be dealt with) and I began hormone treatment a month later. It pays to make appointments well in advance of when you get confirmation because there are often long waits for schedule openings. You can always cancel an appointment and reschedule if it appears that you won't be ready for it.

I understand this was a rather rapid excursion, however. :)

A therapist can't prescribe anything, only a doctor can. You may be able to find one who will prescribe them for you without a therapist's or p-doc's recommendation, but I doubt it. The number of sessions required to get that letter all depends on them, they will take whatever time is necessary to be comfortable with the decision. The best way to keep it moving is to be completely open with them, don't hesitate or hold back.

I was recommended for hormones on my first psych meeting after I was diagnosed during the session. It was 3 and a half weeks from that date to starting HRT.

This would not happen now, as after the Russell Reid case, most psychs recommend hormones on the second visit.

My Sexologist recomended that I start HRT and I agree. Time has come finally to take that next step. I am curently dealing with some other health issues, but I expect to start HRT sometime in November. It took me 3 years to get this far. Why do I want to travel on? because it is just too confusing to live two lives, especially when the male life sucks.
Good luck to you

First I had to see a GP to be referred to a Therapist - I got a referral from her straight away.

But then had to wait about 6 weeks for an appointment with the Therapist.

When I saw the Therapist, once again I got a referral straight away.

But then I had to wait 7 weeks for an appointment to see an Endocrinologist !

Then when I saw him, I had to have blood tests and wait another month for the results and another appointment.

Then I was put on Anti- Androgens and was told I'll have to wait 2 months for them to reduce my male hormone levels before I get the female ones.

As they say - This is going to be a Marathon - not a Sprint. !

I'm convinced that the way you present yourself in dress and attitude will determine how long it will take to get a referral. If you turn up in guy mode or if you have inconsistant answers to the doctors questions then they will have their doubts and it will take a lot longer.

If you go in there looking smart, confident and determined, then nothing will stop you.
