A couple of nights ago, I happened to put on the Beatles White Album a supper-time music (my wife likes it.) I wasn't really listening to it at all, but happened to notice a few odd words near the end of "Obladi Oblada"

http://www.asklyrics.com/display/Beatles/Obladi_Oblada_Lyrics/31021.htm

On the first pass through,

Happy ever after in the market place
Desmond lets the children lend a hand
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face
And in the evening she's a singer with the band.

But then when the song takes a second pass through the same couple of verses:

Happy ever after in the market place
Molly lets the children lend a hand
Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face
And in the evening she's a singer with the band.

Checking around, I find some small discussion of cross-dressing and gender-bending amongst the Beatles:

Many years ago I saw a picture book of the Rolling Stones and they were all in drag for a picture. Curious how it's ok for them but us??

Brian Viglione from the Dresden Dolls is an out CD. He wrote an article for Matthew's Place (http://www.matthewshepard.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Voices_Brian_Viglione), too. In case you were curious!

I think there's something about the music industry that makes pushing boundaries more acceptable (David Bowie, Queen, KISS, Green Day, etc). Maybe because they're known for pushing all boundaries?

Well now, how about Paul Whitehead, an artist of some repute who did many Genesis album covers? She's known to many as Trisha van Cleef.

Then, there's Eddie Izzard....

Ah, yes, the same as the distinction between "crazy" and "eccentric".

Don't forget Curt Cobain [Nirvana] & Mick Fleetwood [Fleetwood Mac]

The first reference to crossdressing I remember seeing in rock was the Mothers of Invention album cover for "We're Only In It For The Money (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/Original_We%27re_Only_in_It_for_the_Money_front_co ver.jpg)" that parodied the Beatles' Sgt. Peppers album. Frank Zappa in a dress!

Sounds Like Molly was a supportive spouse.

Also don't forget Lola by the Kinks, sounds like the Brits were accepting crossdressing long before it was acceptable here in the USA.:2c:

David Bowie, Queen, KISS, Green Day, etc.

Don't forget the first crossdressing band of all Alice Cooper. (Still one of the best male vocalists ever!)

Yes one of my faves off the album. Read any book on the Beatles and they talk about a fascniation with TVs they met on the streets of Germany in the late 50s.
However the story with this track is that Paul messed up the lyrics when he sang it but got such a kick out of it they left it like that on the record.

I'm not clear, in the information I found, that Alice Cooper was first -- very early, yes

On the other hand for "crossdressing band" you could possibly go back at least to troubador times, when women couldn't perform on stage in a lot of places.

I have wondered for some time if McCartney is indeed a bit transey. He definately had the arching eyebrows for it !.. a pretty face really. There was a TV special that he did a long time ago called James Paul McCartney (in the UK) that has a dance skit in it and all of the dancers are half male and half female (including him)... pink dresses and all. Also,.. I really liked Linda... and there are many pictures where she is fairly "butchy" looking. Hmmm.. I wonder :)

As a side note Prince was once interrupted by his wife during an interview about a dress she had in her hands. Prince replied,.. is that mine or yours ?
