View Full Version : Unexpected Crying

I know we all cry at times when were watching certain movies or tv shows that feature sensitive stuff, like "chick flicks" for example. And it is totally acceptable to do it in those situations. Some of us even do it alot more than others, me for example.

But here's my question. When was the last time you were watching a tv show or a movie and you weren't expecting to cry? And you had to fight back the tears for fear of being laughed at or ridiculed for doing so. Like crying during an "action" film for example. Or crying when a sports figure get injured during a game and your sitting there with all your buddies.

My experience was very recent, as in less than a week ago. Me and my dad were watching the movie "Hancock" starring Will Smith. Here we are enjoying a good "manly" superhero movie lol. And there is a scene in a restaurant over dinner where Charlize Theron's character is asking Hancock about his past. And just as the story gets emotional my eyes well up. And a single tears rolls down my cheek seconds before the same thing happens to Charlize in the movie. I can't tell you how fast I wiped that sucker off to prevent my dad form seeing it lol. And how hard I tried to hold back anymore tears lol.

So whats everyone else's tale?

I tend to cry a lot more lately...
The song ""Love remains the same" by Gavin Rossdale does it every time.

Sometimes I will just think of something and start.

I have always been very emotional and cry probably more than my fare share , my therapist has assured me that it is a good quality and nothing to be ashamed of.
I don`t get as embarrassed as I used to , probably due to getting a little older and not worrying about what others might think of me as much.

I heard some song the other day that made me kind of emotional.

I don't recall openly crying at a song or movie since I was 7 and watched the Secret Garden. The part where the little girl was dreaming and her mom just ran away when she was calling to her upset me a lot.

I cry when the girl gets her man, when I know the girl isn't going to get her man. I cry during most operas, some classical music and a whole host of songs. In fact I seem to cry at almost everything that has an emotional content, the tackier the better- I'm almost cryaing at this- FDL.

I have never been afraid of my emotions and do not try to hide them. My wife like this quality about me and it was there long before I started to dress. As others have said. It is healthy, but that does not mean that at times I will try to hide it and quickly wipe away a tear or two.

How about during the "Dirty Dozen" when Jim Brown tossed the grenades in the Nazi bunker and then was shot getting away?
Anyone who's seen "Sleepless in Seatle" knows what I'm refering to.

About once a week I'll come very close to crying at an almost random time. I mean, there's something I'm thinking about, but it's not something that would usually make me that emotional. Just last Friday I almost cried thinking how nice it was that a lady invited me to have Thanksgiving with her family.

The only time I can remember actually having a tear roll down my face from a movie was 10 years ago when Saving Private Ryan came out. Here I am with 2 guys in a big theater watching a war movie, and I was just totally unprepared for the opening scene.

A few days after I started taking estrogen, I randomly cried at a friend's house. I think Food Network was on. I think I got that under control, though.

Stop, your making me well up just thinking of that poor car.lol
Ever self deserving car guy sheds a quiet tear at the destruction of a perfectly good muscle car, lol.

But seriously, yes I have done the same.

Funny thing though is there is a certain action movie that also makes my brother cry. So its just not us.

With my wife being in and out of the hospital since august, the stress has been hard. I do a lot of driving and sometimes in the solitude I just weep.

dear ones,
it is good to cry,
to let it all out,
to be more than what's expected of us.
its good for my children to know that's how i am. and my wife appreciates it too. without knowing how extensive my inner softness is.
i think real men do cry, and should, at things like the carnage in Saving Private Ryan.
or Nearer My God to Thee, a personal trigger, regardless of James Cameron and company's artistry.
some things should make us weep, if we're alive.
other things are a joy to "give water" for.
a benefit, being an emotional "manly man," is we don't have to fret over running mascara whilst in drag.
what a joy, to feel, to be.
gushingly,
jessie

I dunno, I guess I was watching the news recently and someone got killed in a car crash or something.

Since my wife of 18 years died of cancer, I realized life certainly has its sad parts and I gave myself the "Big OK" to cry anytime I want to, or, need to.

Just try and stop me. I'm allowed. It's in the Constitution somewhere...

I've noticed, as long I just cry normally and get on with it, that it doesn't bother me, or, anyone I'm around a bit.

And, gimmie a break...

After all, I LAUGH at all the funny parts!

OMG .... I cry at a moments notice. Seriously, I have a very low ability for being able to control my "crying type feelings" and I tear-up at the slightest "wave of emotion" that hits me for almost any reason. I am such a wimp.

Happiness, sadness, or just feeling overwhelmed by it all (whatever "it" maybe). It used to be a big problem as igt would happen at the most inappropriate times. I'm getting better these days but I still get very teary eyed very easily .... especially when I think about my happiness concerning my life, love, and destiny .... but a sad movie will do it too!

Well Karen said again, huggs to you girl. But seriously there has been numerous times where I would be wiping the tears off the face and my wife and daughters would comment on it in a loving but kidding way. Since My wife past I still do but there is no teasing now. It's natural and as said before it is a good thing. You have a heart and don't be afraid to let it talk to you. Huggs Keli

My best friend recently past away. He knew of Elaine (did not approve) but he knew and was still my best friend. After the funeral I have heard his grandson (16 yo) making light of the fact that I Cried so hard during the service. I have tried many times to be as nice to the boy, but no luck. Guess I just need to stay away from him.

The most unexpected tear jerker for me was
"Field of Dreams" when his dead father came out of the corn field and played catch with him.. I almost bit my tongue off..

Also,
"Big Fish"
"Mr. Holland's Opus"
"West Side Story"...I now stop watching before Tony gets killed..

There are a lot more, but I can't think of them now.

About three months ago I was watching the new remake of King Kong and all of a sudden after they bring him back to New York and he breaks free and is looking for the heroine and climbs the empire state building and is getting shot at I start losing it. I mean it hit me hard, I couldn't stop, I felt soooo bad for Kong. My wife thought I had an allergy or was starting to catch a cold lol.

Hi Lori: I guess I'm in the wrong place. I very seldom cry but then again I'm probably more emotional than most. In my 53 years I can't think of more than a couple of times that I cried where someone could see me, at least since the age of 15 or 16. Once was when we buried our oldest child. I guess it was ok to cry then although I tried very hard to be macho for my wife through it all. This last summer I teared up really bad when I said good-bye to my mom after our family reunion in Yellowstone. It's just not in my psyche to allow myself to be seen crying. Maybe it's because when I was growing up I was told that boys aren't supposed to cry, and after all I am a boy.

I actually am usually very controlling and secretive about my emotions, mostly because I always try to be the "strong-man" in the emotional situations. A few years ago, my mom was very very depressed, before she and my dad divorced, and she attempted suicide. When my dad told everyone, he was strong for my brother while I was for my sister, and then when they left the room, I kept a dry eye and comforted my dad. Only once I was alone did I let it out. If you're trying to convince someone that everything's going to be alright, it's easier to do it when you're call and in-control than when you're crying too, I think.

That said, I am much more outward with my emotions when I'm mentally in girl mode. I smile and laugh a decent amount in guy mode when I'm happy, but the emotions are all a lot more extreme when I'm feeling girly.

Another reason that I'm so grateful for my SO is because she's one of the only people I can let myself cry around. If anyone else is around, I'll hold back a tear like crying is a death sentence, but when I'm with her, I can let it out if I need to.

I have found myself nearly-crying, or having to hold it back, at unexpected times occasionally, though. Usually in girl mode, but a time or two in guy mode too. It always catches me completely offguard, cause I very rarely cry.

I know I am extremely sensitive even for a girl. But last week I surprised even myself. We took our little daughter to see Madagascar 2 (funny animated movie for kids). I'm laughing and then suddenly I start to cry while the whole theater is still laughing (it wasn't that touchy scene). Well, that was embarrassing.

Yeah, I've come close several times at the end of Star Trek 2, but I usually keep it under control. :)

OK, forget that ... I cried just now watching it again :heehee:

What the hell kinda girly nerd cries watching Star Trek??? Star Trek 2 is such a fascinating movie, though. The writers/director never did anything else of note, and Ricardo Montalban is the closest thing to a good actor in the movie. It's definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time, though, and I'm not even a Star Trek fan.

Even if you hate anime, Grave of the Fireflies is an amazing movie that will make you very happy and very sad. It's beautiful.

American Beauty is probably the only movie that made me cry from feeling happy. I love when Lester's whole outlook changes, and it shows him getting up to go jogging and the camera is flying overhead and it's playing The Seeker.

I guess we all can get very emotional at movies. I remember one episode that made me really angry at stupid male coping mechanisms.

My wife and I were graduate students, watching Sophie's Choice at a campus theater (auditorium really). As the climatic scene played out, I was actually having a hard time even breathing. At just the wrong moment some goddamned undergrad yelled out something he thought was clever, and laughter rippled through the room. After all, you can't cry like a sissy, can you?

I think it was the last movie I ever saw on campus.

We watched Mighty Joe Yong, the other day. First time I've ever saw the whole movie. My wife told me about the end, but when he fell off the Ferris wheel, the water came a poring. Then we watched Hancock, at the end when I thought Angle died, we cried so much.

I was never raised to think that crying was not for "jocks". I, like others, cry when the national anthem is played, our flag is raised and during film scenes that have a human interest theme. I don't try to hide it and am never ashamed as after all I am a human being not a robot.

A few weeks ago I did abit when I watched a dog on TV being resqued from the freezing water he was stuck in. Once they got him on land and dried him off he went into shock and it looked like he was dying, it was a sad sight to watch and even the cop on the scene was crying.

Had a happy ending though as he recovered fully:thumbsup:

I have'nt had a good cry in ages, but now and again I get the odd tear watching a sad movie.
I am very sensitive, and emotional though. But I'm never afraid to show my tears.
The orginal "King kong" where he is on the chrysler building always gets me teary...
A few other movies are "Awakenings", where Robert De Niro is shaking terribly trying to put Robin Williams glasses back together. That scene can send me into a tear frenzy.

That's not silly.

I watched that film in the cinema and started crying at that scene. I bought the DVD and cried at that scene and every time I have seen it, which is a lot, that scene has my eyes stinging every time. Even remembering it from your mention has me fighting tears.

I hope you came back into the room for the last bit at the end though.

Golly , I cry at the slightest nowaday......wept really heavily this very mornin when I saw an animal charity advert on tv ( Brooke foundation ) I,m full of flu so that didnt help , but I just blub ....
Certain movies grab my emotions too , some are pretty odd ... the opening scene of Star Wars always works, the end scene of Shawshank redemption kills me , Merry christmas Mr Lawrence is a goodie for a weep too .
Even bloomin tv shows have had me weep .... goodness.
I chatted to friends on this subject in the past ( they dont know about Michelle ) and a few had addmitted to feeling the same , one or two even remarked as they,ve aged emotions become greater . I have to agree .
Its even happened at concerts I,ve attended . Pink Floyd , floored me when near the end they played comfortably numb , linkin Park even had me bubble with Crawling.
Then theres new years eve....... Auld Langs really makes me go for it ...indeed if i,m out , I,ve been known to disapear whilst everyone sings the year out and in.........

better get the tissues ready for christmas morning......

emotions - who needs em ?

I do .

I guess I cry when I'm really happy or really sad.

The first time I held my grand daughter I was so emotional I just totally lost it.

Now when I'm watching the news on PBS and they show, in silence, the names and faces of those killed in action I have to look away, but I still cry everytime.

I don't have any unexpected crying episodes in public; but when I'm alone, it happens about twice a week; the littlest thing can set me off. In contrast, when I was younger, maybe this would happen maybe once in ten years. I chalk it up to My subconscious spending so much time fighting depression that when I'm alone, I just let go what I try so hard to suppress when in public.

I always feel like crying during movies or even tv shows; seeing the other responses, I can see that being so emotional is most likely linked to also being a CD.
The last time I almost cried was during a tv show called "cold case". I was watching it with some male cousins that don't know I'm a CD. My cousins were totally indiferent emotionally to the story, while I was ready to cry my eyes out.

There's a song by REM, Nightswimming. I really struggle to hold it together when I hear that. Also, 'Be Mine' by REM does the same. God, I'm fillin' up just reading the lyrics below! :heehee:

I never thought of this as funny
It speaks another world to me
I wanna be your Easter bunny
I wanna be your Christmas tree.

I’ll strip the world that you must live in
of all its godforsaken greed.
I’ll ply the tar of your feathers.
I’ll pluck the thorns out of your feet.
You and me.
You and me.
You and me.

And if I choose your sanctuary.
I’ll want to wash you with my hair.
I’ll want to drink of sacred fountains
and find the riches hidden there.

I’ll reap the lotus and the pyote.
I’ll want to hear the caged-bird sing.
I’ll want the secrets of the temple.
I’ll want the finger with the ring.
You and me.
You and me.
You and me.

And if you made me your religion.
I’ll give all the room you need.
I’ll be the drawing of your breath.
I’ll be carpet you should weave.
I’ll be the sky above the Ganges
I’ll be the vast and stormy sea.
I’ll be the lights that guide you inland.
I’ll be the visions you will see.
Visions you will see.
You will see.
You will see.
You and me.
You and me.
You and me.

Ooh ... songs that make me cry ... These made my cry before I ever saw videos for them ... and the videos really push them over the top.

Nine Inch Nails - Right Where It Belongs (Tour Visuals) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkw0C7vt5B8)

Imagine being at the concert for that. The whole place is packed with NIN fans looking to hear Closer or something, and that gets projected on a 30-foot screen behind the stage. By the end of the song it's dead silent.

These are pretty amazing, too.

Moby - When It's Cold I'd Like To Die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDF3MQIOZ84)

Gary Jules - Falling Awake (Grey's Anatomy) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jK7DlWammyo)
Gary Jules - Falling Awake (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwl3oFq6Ll8)

There are some songs that seem to have actually engineered a kind of orchestral swell specifically to make people cry, like this one:

Sigur Rós - "Heima" Trailer (Hoppipolla Version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhLZP6Cz2dA)

These two songs seem so nice and happy, but when you listen to the lyrics they're very powerful.

The Flaming Lips - Fight Test (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKDZ6yubitM)

The Postal Service - Nothing Better (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_9nIljBYTc)

Johnny Cash had some powerful stuff...

Johnny Cash - Hurt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go)

Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e0EQlQXoEo)

Then there are sweet girls doing acoustic covers that just exude a purity that makes me want to cry. The first one is the most adorable German girl.

The Weepies - Nobody Knows Me At All (cover) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQbQlXerqA0)

Marie Digby - Umbrella (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=589Mvlz6LWE)

Speaking of guitars, there are some songs that just the tune itself affects me.

Joe Satriani - Always with me, always with you (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4fPv450OYM)

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb - Pulse 1994 (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWnapx502uQ)

But I'm weird. Playing Even Rats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gw2ZUaeT-c) on Guitar Hero 1 made me cry a few times...

Then there are some songs that I still find extremely emotional even if they don't make me cry. They usually make me glassy-eyed.

Hayley Westenra - Pokarekare Ana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koi_f3fB2h8)

Trespassers William - Vapour Trail (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh4lhjI8p30)

Imogen Heap - Hide And Seek (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cpSv2mNhhc)

The National - Fake Empire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBujZr20O6M)

I've come pretty close to crying a couple times in the middle of a bar when they played Bleeding Love, too. Sheesh!

Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF84pIhP5UM)

I'm not proud to admit that even cheesy 80's music has made me cry a couple times...

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td1ZLqrEpXI)

Of course, if you're getting all depressed, this can always make you feel better.

Monty Python - Lumberjack Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xToPCaNxaow)

I was watching CNN with my wife when the Hero's presentation segment came up. Listening and watching what these 10 fantastic hero's have done in their lives made me weep openly. Go to CNN and type heros for the segment. Fortunately, my wife was weeping as much as I was!
