My lawyer called last night with the news that my court ordered name change finally got approval. I'm headed to her office right now to pick up the certified copy. I am officially, legally, irrefutably Kara Christine !!!!!
A lot of different emotions are flooding through me right now. Elation of course, what a happy day, almost like a kind of birthday. And a sense of wonderment at the enormity of this change. It's beyond my wildest dreams of what I thought could have happened in my life...
Now begins the complicated, messy document dance. From what I've read, there are a couple months of paperwork loose ends and headaches to change everything officially. Headed to the DMV first then the social security office. Armed with those 2 powerful pieces of ID, I feel like I can take on the world !!! (or at least the mean ladies in the restroom:brolleyes:).

Congratulations, Kara! :)
The sensation I felt when the judge approved my own name change six months ago is indescribable. I felt that I was truly letting the world know that this TS stuff is real for me and that I truly am what I appear to be striving to be.
And, yeah, you have scads of paperwork and phone calls to look forward to, not only those you mention, but anyone or any company that you have dealings with, such as utilities, magazines, your bank, insurance companies, and oh so many others. Make sure you print out many copies of the court order!
Again -- congratulations!! :hugs:

Thanks so much, everyone. I'm grateful and humbled by the love shown lately - it's nice to have an opportunity to share good news.
It's very empowering to get "official" sanction for what is mostly a personal, internal transition.
For the record, and in case it may ease anxiety for others when the time comes, people have been very sweet and helpful about this so far. This afternoon alone I was able to get a new drivers license, change my bank and credit card information, change my lease/tenant information with my landlord and update my auto title. Whew. :drink:
Everyone I've come into contact with so far has been enthusiastic and congratulatory. At the DMV I had a supervisor and a security officer come up to congratulate me. The love is flowing today, and I sincerely wish that it rubs off on others too - I know that the holidays can be particularly tough for some of us.
Thanks again to everyone and happy holidays,
Kara

May I ask whether you are post-op?
I wanted more particularly to know what the requirements were in order to change your name... did they allow you to change your sex as well? I hear changing names is quite easy, but changing sex is harder. I think you only changed your name right? did you need a lawyer? sorry, it sounds like i'm raining on your parade... i'm just trying to get some information to see maybe if I can change my name as well.. my bf's ex was lucky and went to DMV who thought they had made an error. she had transitioned at that time and looked like a woman so they just changed it and gave her a new ID with her sex changed. she also went to court in order to have her sex changed and they didnt give a fuss about it. but i have heard situations where courts/dmv would only do that if you brought a birth certificate and/or were post-op. so i'm a little confused.
Maybe I'll start a new thread.
but congratulations!

The challenges differ from State to state in the US. I don't know about elsewhere. I'm just starting to research this, as it is going to be my spring project. ......Congratulations, Kara! Yay! I'm so happy, especially that you were treated with respect and compassion on your quest. We may have a ways to go, but the world is certainly changing for us, in many ways. That's great news. Happy for you.
Hugs,
Melissa:)

Just to add I've been reading your posts and they are helping to clarify my own feelings of either being TS or just a Crossdresser. I am planning on seeking professional counseling to help sort my feelings out, your posts help me personally. Just wanted to let you know.. :battingeyelashes:
