In my transition process, I wanted to reach out to my sisters and ask them if they knew which states are the most tg-friendly. I know DC has laws against discriminating tgs for employment. I know WA has some of the most lax laws about legally changing gender/names. Does anyone else have any other hints... Needless to say, I know that states like NY, CA tend to be more friendly than say, AR or KS. But I kinda needed more details. Thanks

I know New Jersey has a pretty good anti-discrimination law for TG/TS/TV. It prohibits employment discrimination, housing discrimination and allows you to use the women's restroom when presenting as a women. I have heard it is one of the better ones in the country.:):)

I live in eastern upstate NY, and while I have never had any real trouble to speak of out in the world. The fact is that NY State has no laws regarding gender identification. When the gay rights bill was passed a few years ago, the "t" at the end of LGBT became inconvenient for the moment, although I really dont remember any major vocal uprising against us. (oh, jeez, I forgot. It was the chickensh*t polititician movement). Througn the hard work of many wonderful people NY's GENDA bill passed the State assembly last year, and hopefully will pass the senate this. But y'know, I'm not really mad at the gay community. It's not their responsibility to work for us. The sooner we realise that our destiny is our responsibility, and stop riding convenient coatails(a ride that often doesnt work), the better off we will be. Having said all that, I, and almost all trans people I know, have never been threatened here, or had a serious problem. But that's pretty much anecdotal. I have heard Florida is a very nice place to be T.
Hugs,
Melissa:)

Here's a list of US jurisdictions that include transgender people in the state and local non-discrimination laws -

Of course, reality is usually not the same. The reality depends on the maturity and education of the people around you.
