For the College Composition class that I am currently taking (umm yeah woohoo, Freshman English @ 36 yrs old...umm yay?), the next unit we are doing is forming proposals. No, not marriage proposals, girls. We have to "identify a problem and offer solutions". We also have to do research from "reliable web resources". Soooo, naturally, one of my thoughts would be to focus on accepting CD/TV/TS/TG (whichever classification best fits everyone) into the regular community without bias, hate, or disdain.
What do you think?

Hello Cindy!
As much as it would mean to you to be really accepted as we are, your professor may just not agree and be against CD (see it as abnormal). With you writing a paper and showing you do not think that way, you may get a lower grade just because of your subject matter.....IE a noble cause fraught with adverse consequences. On second thought, you could get away with it if your teacher is a CD or you start the paper with the story that your brother came out to the family and it became a big deal. Then go into why you agree with your brother. Just random thoughts.

Probably be easier to propose to solve world peace or hungar.. Global warming or continental drift... That's a tough subject!!

Solve that issue and you should get a Doctorate not a bachelor's degree.

Take some advice from someone who went back to school at 48. Pick something easier. Although your choice is admirable, it is a difficult subject.

Way too tall an order for practically anybody. There has to be an easier subject. Maybe a synopsis on the chicken and the egg.
Remember, you've been out of school for quite awhile. Make it easy on yourself.

That would be an interesting report, the only thing that may be a problem I think, is that in order to propose a solution you need to identify the problem that would mean understanding CDing to explain it, and most of us can't do it ( if any of you do , please feel free to corret me ) but good luck on your proyect.

too bad no one can be encouraging
We have to "identify a problem and offer solutions
It's a class and all the teacher wants to see is the thought process an to see if she can use good logic for a convincing argument. The only thing I can suggest is to chose one aspect of the TG world.
If you are not "out", then you just might out yourself.

I did a similar thing when I was in my 40's taking an English Comp class. However my subject was on abusive religion. It was after the internet was going good and in the class at the same time, I also had to make my own web page. So for my picture I put in one of myself enfemme and a note about it. Mine was one the professor displayed and she was really cool with it. I remember one of my class mates exclaiming "Thats you?".
Like Carroll said, the teacher just wants you to use your thought processes and learn how to do research.

Cindym5,
What a wonderfultopic. It's always great to see people take a challenging topic in school. I applaude you for not going for an easy topic. Keep this thread posted on what you decide to write about. Also on your professor and/or class reaction. When writing it's always best to write about wat is close to you. Way to go, you get an A++++ for effort.

I do many proposals for my job. Normally proposals are something concrete, not something idealistic like accepting the CD/TV/TS/TG community. In my job, I identify a problem a client has, then offer them a proposal to help them solve that problem. It is a sales tactic that can be very successful. In order to offer a proposal, the person offering it must be an expert. They must be well versed with the client's needs, and able to offer them valid advice.
What you want to do may better be classified as a persuasive paper , and it may not be what the professor is looking for. It's been over 25 years since I took freshmen english, but it doesn't sound like it's changed all that much.
You may be setting yourself up for some serious criticism. Not only from the professor, but from the students in the class as well. Remember, they are mostly teenagers.
I wish you the best, whatever you choose.

Without taking chances, you will not grow! I say do it. I would pick a narrow topic though so that it would be easier to defend.
May I suggest you propose that a company or organization adopt the principles expressed by the Human Rights Campaign (http://www.hrc.org/). Diversity is a prominent topic among a number of forward thinking corporations, so you could easily demonstrate how it would affect their bottom line.
I will tell you it's easier to out yourself in a college setting than a company setting. I've taken two semesters of B&W film photography and Tracy has been front and center in a number of projects. It's a great opportunity to educate others about the whole TG spectrum!
Love, Tracy (Go for it )

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm taking it all into consideration. I'm not worried so much about outing myself, being that I'm taking the class online and after the Spring semester I'll be transferring to another school anyway.
That's just one of two proposals that will be due this week. I may pick something different just because it could be something too broad. The other one will have to be on "pick a problem that you've found with the school and propose a solution". BELIEVE ME, that's opening a can of worms!!! I really don't know if they want to get me started on that one!

I don't think I would write about that for all of the reasons previously expressed by the sisters. I remember when I was a freshman in college and had to write a paper, I chose a much easier topic and because of the views I took, the teacher made me come to the office and I got a lecture over it.
Still hurting over that,

Outting yourself in college may be easy for some...
College students can usually accept others easier than the general population, though that might not be true in some communities... What's yours like?
So I might consider it unless I had close friends who would not understand what was going on unless I told them first.
On second thought, I also agree that doing a paper on another subject may be easier. This is for several reason including the fact that it is much easier to write about things that you are not personally involved with. I can't help think how many tears might flow for an average T girl doing a story like that.
My suggestion is that you consider doing a story for the newspaper. It would likely impact far more. Just remember, if you want to people to understand you you have to show them that you undertstand them. The closer you get them to see how similar you are to them the more likely they will be to understand you...
