from what i understand, there is a lot of therapy and counselling done before even getting to the stage of being considered for SRS (sex reassignment surgery). aside from that, there are messy complications, and it's not legal everywhere.

have a look at http://www.transsexual.org ... and read Jennifer Diane Reitz's story. it was sad at times, but it's the life story of someone who has gone through the whole procedure.

Here's another great site, that has lots of photo examples from most of the major surgeons performing SRS right now. http://www.annelawrence.com/twr/ You'll also find links there to many other good info sites...

As a postop, I definately know what the op is, and I can say that for me... Yes it was worth it. If I had it to do over again? I might research a little better and perhaps choose a different surgeon (not that I chose a bad one, actually one of the best), but yes I would do it again. I can't imagine myself not doing it.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Avril,

Everyone is different and there is no one right answer to your questions. Get all the good information you can and find a good well experienced therapist. Besides the websites mentioned above here are two more:

http://www.transgendercare.org (http://www.transgendercare.org/)

http://www.tsroadmap.com (http://www.tsroadmap.com/)

I hope you find happiness.

Why I'd be happy to...

First off, do check out the links. Iam sure that it's probably explained, and at Ann Lawrence's site it is shown photographically in great detail...
WARNING... THIS LINK AND THIS POST IS VERY GRAPHIC! If you're not really interested, then don't go there, because it would be way more than you ever wanted to know.
http://www.annelawrence.com/meltzersrs01.html

This is the surgeon that I went to. Dr Toby Meltzer. He does the "Penile Inversion" technique. Generally, you can tell when a person who says that they're a TS is serious, when they start having appointments with their Electrologist to remove hair in areas that will make you scream... Toby requires some electrolysis to be done in the areas that will be used during the surgery. This is done, to help prevent hair from growing in places where it shouldn't be, if'n ya know what I mean...:o

For the surgery, basically they use quite a bit of what's there. The Glans Penis, becomes the clitoris. They disect away down to the nerves for the glans, and place it in the area that it would normally go. Having the nerves, means that the chances of being orgasmic afterward, are very high. I had my first orgasm at about the 3 month point afterward. It may not work out for everyone though, and it's one of the risks that a TS takes... It does seem to work out for most though. The tube of skin surrounding the shaft of the penis, becomes part of the lining of the vaginal wall. They may use some of the extra skin also which went through electrolysis for this... They take this skin, and fill it with a gause stent. Then they get rid of the testicles etc... Finally, they disect out the vaginal cavity in the muscle tissue between the urethra and the colon, and anchor it in with a stitch or two that come out the front of the abdomen. Then they close up all of the external seams, and send you out to recovery... This whole procedure, is called Vaginoplasty.

Months later, when and if you desire, you can have the Labiaplasty. In this surgery, they give the clitoris a hood and create better looking labia for the new vagina. I had this done also, at the 6 month point after the Vaginoplasty. It takes significantly less time, with only overnight hospital stay, and you're actually awake during this one...

This is the technique that I had done. There are others, and other surgeons out there. Atleast one procedure that Iam aware of, uses part of the Colon to for the vaginal wall... It's supposed to be more like GW's vaginal tissue, and may also be self lubricating... It's probably more expensive though, and definately I would think, more invasive. I would think that it would probably require more recovery time also.

Any way, hope this helps. The link I posted above, definately goes into all the detail photographically. It's not me in the pictures however, although I would not have had a problem with them being taken of me... There are numerous examples of Toby's work at this site, and most of the other surgeons out there, for anyone who's interested.
