View Full Version : Do you visit the forum at work?

I've belonged to various forums and online communities over the years. It's never been a problem to check in on them while on break/lunch at work.

Not being "out" with my coworkers, I don't dare even load this or any other cd-oriented website at work, let alone log in. Even if no one saw my computer screen, it would show up in the router logs with my computer's ip attached to it. I can't chance loosing my job, or at the very least drastically changing the dynamic between me and my coworkers (cding isn't widely tolerated around here).

How many of you load up this site from work? Anyone else cut off while on the clock? Any interesting stories about getting caught viewing this site at work?

Never ever. Like you said, IT does track these things in most large companies. Add to it that they use software that blocks pages with questionable wording and I would probably not get this site up anyway. Work time is for work or else there will be no more shopping due to a lack of funds.

I'm on my laptop, plus have google Chrome which has the incognito part so there's no problem for me. :)

I'd love to visit during a work day, but it wouldn't be good judgement - I have to wait until I get home, which, luckily, is only a 10 minute trip.

Not allowed to use the net at work. They have it pretty well locked down. Besides, I'm rarely in front of a computer, otherwise I'd just go nuts.

Never at work, it could come back to haunt you. Even the I.T. guy may have someone looking over his shoulder at work. Too many ways to get info from company systems. We had a outside audit, due to some questions a supervisor came up with.

Absolutely 100% no. As much as I enjoy this site. It's the last thing on my mind when at work.

I don't have the time, and the IT department can look at my computer from theirs. Any free time such as lunch is spent with friends or working.

No, I am actually the horse's patootie that had our IT folks deny general access to any social networking site, blogs, etc for productivity and client privacy reasons. I can however access yahoo, google, and even order lingerie and shoes, tho'! :D

I would never think about going to any non-work related site (well maybe CNN). After having to discipline an employee, who, in one month accrued 60 pages (single spaced) of websites he had visited that were "porn" based, I know how closely IT is watching.

Not worth the risk.

At my work, they frown on personal use of the internet, IT complains because of Bandwidth. Also, IT blocks a lot of sites with even the slightest questionable content, can't even get to Wikipedia.

But my job is usually a split shift schedule, 3 or 4 hours in the morning, off for about 2, back on the clock for the other 5 or 4 hours for 8 total. There is a library across the street with Wifi, and I access the Net from they're Wifi with my Laptop on that gap.

I recently got my ITouch and can now surf the forums on my break at work :> screen is small enough to see and read everything but no one can see what im looking at :> just a real pain to write responses, so if my replys on post are really short and badly formatted you know im at work LOL

I could, but I choose not to. The main reason, I feel when at work I should be 100% dedicated to work...this allows me to not feel guilty about being 100% not dedicated to work at the end of the day.

I'm fortunate to be one of only 2 employees at my "mom & pop" business. We are allowed to do whatever we want as long as we are making the shop $$. So yes, I do log on at work.

I completely overlooked the option of having a personal laptop or hand held device in the poll.

For all of you using your personal devices to access the forum at work, all I can say is - YOU CHEATERS! lol Naa, just kidding. :)

I'd do that too if my hand held had decent internet options.

So far, the poll is turning out a lot like I expected though, with the majority of people who won't chance it while at work. Completely understandable.

At my job, they really don't mind personal internet use as long as it's restricted to breaks and lunch and so long as people don't access questionable sites. I don't think a cd site is "questionable" by their policy, but it sure could get me in to trouble for obvious reasons.

I recently attended a management course. One of the speakers was a attornery. She was a very interesting speaker. One of the topics was use of computers at the workplace. She told us that more information is obtained through accessing the computer records at work of employees and is used at litigations and trials. You have no right of privacy at all on a company computer or if your using the company system to access the internet.

No, I never visit this or other personal intrest sites at work. It is forbidden and crossdressing is not that accepted in Holland. I don't want to jeopardize my carreer.

I have my own private office and bring my personal laptop to work. Although, I am connected to their wireless signal, it is my laptop that I use. This site is not blocked so I do look at post during my lunch break or for a little bit of time during the day.

Just keep in mind what TerriM said, there is NO privacy !

Your employers server is probably logging everything you see, and every where you go.

I visit this site all the time at work. I work in a small office(only 5 people). I try to only go on when I'm here along or when the boss is in a meeting. I'm in a cubicale within a office by myself. I can usally see who's coming in. I've almost been cought a few times, but nobodys said anything. Other people here surf the web all the time. The boss doesn't mind, as long as we get the work done and not looking at porn. If I hear or see someone coming, I just X out. I ALL WAYS delete my browsing history after I log off here from work. Ther is no IT person. I paid alot of money for a laptop and internet access at home, but I can't help logging on here. I love this site.

Everyone in my life knows about me, including work, so I have no concerns about being 'found out', but I work for a large newspaper publisher, with a pretty strict internet policy, so I tend (when I get the time) to just look at news sites and the likes at work. Not worth the risk, especially in these times of companies looking for any excuse to cull staff.

I am self employed , use a laptop and I have an air card so I can do whatever I please anywhere I please.
That is one of the benefits to being self employed.

Since I'm an owner/operator in the trucking industry and have my own laptop and wireless internet, I can log on anytime I want, except when driving of course (but many truckers do use their computer while driving!).

Whilst it may be permissable to access the internet at work for personal use, accessing this site or similar, even searching with google etc is taking more of a risk than you can understand.

Traces of where you've been, when and for how long are left in any number of places. Even when you wipe your history and cookies you do not erase every trace.

Just think along the lines of those who use their computers for illegal purposes, how the authorities can still recover evidence for prosecution.

If in doubt, don't do it.

A work computer is owned by the company you work for and as such they want the work computer used for work. I used to work for a nationally known company that tightly watched what internet sites one went to at work. so specalized sites like this one would not be tollerated.

Now and since March of '04 I work as a government contractor and I have on internet access at work, which is just fine with me. I do use a computer to clock in and clock out everyday and to log the work orders that I work on everyday.

It is probably locked at my job. I would not risk it at my job though. But, when on lunch and breaks, I have my little handy dandy G1 and i do go on there. :)

I do not work any longer but when I did I never even once went online to any non work related website. They would have discovered it and I would have been terminated immediatly with no questions asked. This happened to many of my co-workers and I was not going to risk my retirement by violating company rules.

Wow - that's very harsh.

Like I said in a previous post, they're very easy going about our personal internet use at work. So long as we keep it to breaks and lunch, they don't care (as long as we don't go to inappropriate non-office-friendly sites that might cause lawsuits). Everyone pulls their own weight and there is a lot of trust, so no need for strict rules about personal internet use.

As I drive a truck, I am more likely to surf the site at work than I am @ home, because it is rare that I get on the net at all while I'm home. Not that I wouldn't like to, but there is usually so many things going on when I'm home I don't find the time. I was at home looking for another forum when I found this one.

I used to at lunch, but the company has since closed and I am now unemployed. They did not have any IT or spyware. Even if they did, I was somewhat out anyway. Poeple there knew I wore panties. A few have seen the waist band and I never tried to hide it. Why should I? I not ashamed. But, when I find a new job, I will not use the company computer. I will just use my laptop.
