View Full Version : Guy vs. Girly

Frankly I don't (or don't even know how) to do many guy-type things. I don't play any sports except bowling (which isn't too macho.) I can't build anything, don't barbecue outside, not any good at home repair or working on a car. I can't swim (for what that's worth.) Never driven my car on a trip for more than 70s miles. Don't hunt and have only fished a little. Never owned or fired a gun. Was never in the military (well, that's kinda obvious if I've never fired a gun.) In other words, I'm much much a ninny.

But I would like to learn and do girly-things like neeedlepoint, sewing, crocheting. And of course get a lot better at make-up application and hair styling (both of which I've done but still pretty well suck at.)

So how does this compare with your experiences of guy vs. girly things you can do?

I am very mechanically inclined, I have worked on cars while enfemme, I do alot of manly work, but I would like to do some feminine work too.

It seems I have quite a large list of guy and girl things I'm capable of doing.

I keep the cars in good repair including regular oil and filter changes.
I am the one to do any sewing, machine or by hand.
In spring I till the soil and plant the garden.
When things ripen I do home canning.
When the wife's at work I have to do the cooking. Otherwise, she prefers to do it...with the exception of outdoor grilling. :D
I'm just as likely to mow the grass as I am to bring in and arrange cut flowers.

I usually don't get into sports (excetp recently --GO STEELERS!!!).
I've fired guns. Target shooting -- never went hunting. Did go fishing.

I think people tend to restrict themselves to doing only those things that they think fit into their gender class. And that's a shame because I feel you should do what YOU want...not because of some antiquated division of the sexes. (Same thing for which clothes you want to wear I guess).

BTW -- You should hear the gasps when women hear that I do the sewing. It's funny.

I'm not sure that everything can necessarily be classified as "guy" or "girl" things especially if you own a home. You become a "Mr. fix-it" out of necessity unless, of course, you are rolling in dough and always get a craftsman to do the work/repairs.:)

I kind of have a healthy Yin Yang balance of being logical and artistic. Basically I'll try anything as long as my hands don't get dirty or covered in gloop... I really hate getting my hands dirty. As such I don't really differentiate between things being male/female pursuits... Well I've straddled that particular divide all my life...

I guess I'm fortunate... I can do most of the manly things ( mechanics, home repair, etc) with fair ease, but I can also cook, sew, do laundry, etc. I do like to dress the part while doing the latter.

you are not a ninny.

we all have different talents which is good. One day the world may see how varied we-they are. Trust me I would have rather of been a beautiful model. And spent my years that way. Instead of wearing BDU's chasing bad guys..But the next x dressa young and confused may see my story and think they are not so different anyway----if they are walking in the same stepsas me ?

there is a reason we are all different. It;s because we come from every walk of life...

god i hope i stayed on msg here:eek:

Hi Laurie

As far as learning to do the girlie things that you would like to do , yesterday I got a post car from the local community college , they have classes for just about anything you could imagine , and there is nothing that says they are just for male or female , so check out your local community college and learn to do the things you enjoy !
We are all different in some way shape or form.

Basically I'll try anything as long as my hands don't get dirty or covered in gloop... I really hate getting my hands dirty.

Me too, and that pretty much rules out anything to do with auto repair. Always hated that anyway so it's not something I remotely miss.

Other than that, I can handle the dirt of gardening because it comes off easy enough. Some home improvement stuff saps the moisture from your hands (like working with tile grout) but I enjoy working around the house. I can enjoy fishing but don't very often, play golf, ice hockey and even a little beach volleyball but none of these lately. Then again (especially true for the home stuff), anything that can be done as a guy can be done in girl mode as well...if circumstances were to allow it.

My guy sides love cars, own 4 of them, but I'm a novice when it comes to auto maintenance and repairs. I can do things, such as, basic oil changes or coolant flushes, but anything more than that (i.e. tune up, brake job, timing belt, etc, etc.) I'm not comfortable doing yet.
Other things I enjoy are going to car shows and track events, sports (i.e. Football, Hockey, Tennis), gun collecting and target shooting, computers, comic book collecting, classic arcade games, and militaria collecting.

Since I live on my own, I do everything from cooking to cleaning whether I'm in guy or girl mode.

As for girly things, I love shopping, dancing, and picking up on the latest in fashion. I've also learned how to hand craft corsages.

I try to excercise whenever I can by running between 1 to 2 miles. I run mostly in drab, but I have ran in femme a couple of times.

Hugs!

I like being a man and I love doing a lot of "guy" stuff. I love to fish, hunt, camp ect. I love sports, especially football. I am pretty good at building things and doing home repairs. And, I change the oil in my vehicles and do car repairs when I can (I hate working on cars but I do it when possible to save $). But, I also have a very feminine side and I'm very comfortable being around women and womens things and I try to be the best "woman" that I can when I dress. I do most of the house cleaning and I cook dinner probably 95% of the time. It's funny that even with all of the guy things that I like to do, my wife lovingly tells me that I'm the woman in our relationship.

My hobbies are "guy" hobbies, but I think that has more to do with my engineering personality. I have a muscle car that I'm constantly taking apart and putting back together, with better parts of course! But when it comes to oil/filter changes, those aren't really any fun so I take them to the local oil/car wash shop and get the package deal. I also do some gaming, mostly team oriented combat related games. I don't do organized sports but I will go out and shoot baskets or throw the ball around with the guys and I'm just as good as they are if not better.

I do a lot of the housework and taking care of the kids, but I don't consider that "girly" activities. I know those chores still remain mostly in the female gender role but I'm a 21st century guy, grew up doing that stuff, and never considered it "women's" work. In fact since my wife's mom did that stuff for her when she was growing up I had to show her a thing or two when it came to doing laundry and cleaning!

I have done some sewing, and I'd like to do more, mostly because I want to be able to hem and let out/take in my own clothes. My only real "girly" hobby I guess is gossip! I try to subscribe to as many gossip channels as I can!

My friends call me MacGyver, my CB handle is Mr. Fixit.
Car Maint, Check.
Lawn Maint, Check.
Computer Maint, Check.
Firearms, pistol & rifle, Check.
Electrical / electronics repair (soldiering, wiring, household, TV/VCR/Microwave/Stereo
heh, just recently, my electric razor needed it's motor contacts resoldiered), Check.
Arrange Flowers, Check (Was a florist for a year)
Sewing, cooking, ironing, etc. etal, ad nauseum, Check.

Makeup, nails, could use a little help on hair, beauty in general, Satisfactory. Check.

Style, EPIC FAIL. My GF noted when I came home from Wal-wort with some things I picked up: Next time, hun, while you're out shopping, pick up some CLASS. She's a booger for that.

I'm getting better at some of the more girly things though, and for that I'm happy. The guy stuff, well, I know quite a few GGs who know how to change their own oil and tires, and don't mind getting their hands dirty, but give me a shovel and tell me to go play in the dirt.. ewww. ;) I'd rather not. He he... go figure.

I absolutely LOVE to dress... any chance I get, and with an approving SO, it is really easy..:) except for the unexpected 'kids' who decide to 'pop in' at unexpected times...

Basically enjoy the 'men' type stuff.. Cars, boats... gardening, cutting the grass, home improvement etc... However, since the SO works and I'm 'retired' I volunteer to do the laundry, some cleaning/cooking etc.. 'Dressed' as often as possible, tho' I don't consider those chores 'girly' things..

Truthfully have no desire to do the 'girly' things mentioned (sewing/crochet/needlepoint), tho' I'd love to learn to style my wigs properly and do my nails/makeup on my own...:battingeyelashes:

I am wondering what types of activities have you been involved in? You list a lot of things that you do not/have not done.

* I'm very mechanically inclined, yet can't fix my car
* I can cook, but don't always like the time it takes to do so
* I don't like to play or watch sports (with the exception of occasional car race and I do like to bicycle)
* I can hand sew somewhat, I get too frustrated at my wife's sewing machine (but so does she). We really need a better machine than the $140 brother from walmart.

I was never in to typical "guy things". I'm not in to sports. Not very handy around the house. Can't fix my car. The list goes on.

I trained in martial arts some time ago. It was a wonderful discipline and really toughened me up. I won't say it "manned" me up - just made me tough enough to deal with many potential dangers that we all face out on the streets in real life. I enjoyed the fighting experience very much. It was a great adrenal rush. I didn't enjoy the somewhat frequent trips to the hospital. We trained FULL contact.

I can't say I'm much in to typical girly things though. With the exception of looking and dressing girly whenever I can, I don't have much interest in activities typically associated with being female. I don't even like to shop for women's clothes. Oh, I LOVE getting them and wearing them, but don't care to browse the stores and shop. Then again, I don't care for shopping either way.

I'm mostly in to nerdy, geeky and just plain weird things. En femme, I'm a nerdy girl. :heehee:

I would like to learn and do girly-things like neeedlepoint, sewing, crocheting. And of course get a lot better at make-up application and hair styling (both of which I've done but still pretty well suck at.)

You really should learn any or all of those, they're very relaxing and can give you an entre' into friendships with other women. I've been a member of a women's craft group for almost 10 years now, and, although we haven't met very often lately, I love it when we get together.

There are lots of ways to learn knitting, crocheting, sewing and the like. There are the classes at community colleges that someone mentioned, there are classes at Michael's and JoAnn's, and there are books and videotapes. Or, perhaps even better, find a friendly woman who will teach you.

I try to get into the contemporary concept that there are no more girl activities and boy activities, but it is hard for me since I also realize that when all is said and done, most guys will still do "guy stuff" and most girls will still do "girl stuff."

So, without making two lists, here are a few of my favorite things . . .

Child Development Specialist/Homemaker for the past 20 years, responsible for child and family development, creating and maintaining a moral and spiritual environment; inspiring personal growth; providing for active involvement in religious experiences; creating an atmosphere for dynamic negotiation; encouraging participation in school and non-school activities including Scouting and sports; planning, scheduling, and organizing family and community events; providing transportation; preparing family meals; conducting all family affairs on-time and under-budget.

My spouse is the breadwinner (although I once was) and is in charge of financial affairs.

Knit and hook rugs, have taken a sewing class, and love to do all of them.
Like Tina N., I'm the gardener and the home canner, both great fun (I make superb preserves)
Backpacker, hiker and geocacher
Scrapbook maker (a girly hobby if ever there was one!)
Do all the regular maintenance on our RV, including oil changes; less creeping under other cars as time goes by
Do 95% of the cooking and virtually all of the grocery shopping, etc.
Target and clay shooter, never have yet tried hunting, don't enjoy fishing
Ham and CB radio operator
Active community volunteer
Active in ladies auxiliary at religious congregation

If you have an interest, Laurie, persue it!

I have restored two cars.
I have remodeled two houses.
I build furniture as a hobby.
I fix everything that breaks around the house and on the cars.
I hunt.
I fish.
I am a competitive shooter.
I cook on the grill outside.
I played sports in my younger days.
I cook, do housework and sew only when I have to. (when my wife makes me.....:))

That's why I can't figure out why I am a crossdresser. Everything I enjoy in life is considered male oriented. :strugglin

I can do a fairly good job with makeup and nails, but have I trouble with fashion.

I am with you Samantha43. I have built homes, remodeled homes. fish, hunt (When I was single, the big game of choice was pretty women), build furniture, used to be a good shot with a pistol before kids came along.

Give me a bra and panties and I am good to go. Not bad with makeup either.

There must be three categories...generally male, generally female, both...so since I haven't thought about it before, lets see what I get:

male:
Love football and baseball (doing and watching, mostly watching these days)
Our heat source is wood...we buy logs and my chain saws are kept busy.
Fix anything and everything
Remodeled/rebuilt two houses
Have most of the tools known to humanity

both:
Accomplished amateur violinist
Love to cook and pretty good at it no matter how complicated
Play golf
love to read.
play bridge

female:
love shopping
love chickflicks
always looking to improve my makeup abilities
get facials and take close care of my skin/nails
I crochet (since I was 4!)
I'm crazy over heels!

OKOK...so it looks like I'm two people who overlap in the middle. Funny, that's exactly how I feel!

I am conflicted.

I am very mechanical and good at it. I always do my own car repairs and occasionally work on others cars as well. My friends know that I can handle any mechanical challenge. But in my heart, I don't want to be a mechanical person, I want to be an artist. My parents were great dancers. I can't dance. My parents were both good a drawing and painting. Nada for me. They were both great singers. I am tone deaf. A horrendous singer. The only thing I can do acceptably is photography and video.

My hobbies (except for dressing) are pretty macho. I road raced motorcycles, motocrossed motorcycles, road raced cars, drag raced cars and motorcycles, I love guns and I was heavily involved in shooting sports and still play occasionally (combat pistol, 3-gun, cowboy) and I am a scratch golfer.

But I love chick flics. I cry every time. I love to shop. I wish I was better at styling wigs. Pretty good at make-up for an old girl. I have kind of given up on having beautiful nails but I did manage to quit chewing them down to the point where they would bleed. I wanted to play with dolls as a child but I played with toy soldiers and cars instead.

I am so confused..... But pretty content, anyway. :D

I am multi-talented - I do a lot of manly man things like work on machinery, operate heavy machinery, build things, build roads, clear land and then I do a lot of girly man things like sewing, reading women's magazines, reading fashion magazines, shopping, putting colors together, etc

I'm not trying to stir up the pot with my response, this is my honest answer:

I've mostly abandoned the idea that there are guy vs. girl things, only what interests me. I'm not very mechanically inclined, most construction things don't interest me, but I do have an interest in sewing. They both (usually) require machines or tools and an element of constructing, it's a matter of whether or not I'd find some satisfaction in the end result. I am very good painter when it comes to remodeling, I'm not fast, but I get a good feeling doing all the trim carefully and all the prep work, I get that same feeling doing makeup.

I find a lot of the "female" things I like doing are related to the "male" things I enjoy, but up until recent years I've been afraid to try them or felt I didn't have the access to them.
