In the addiction treatment/recovery community we talk about "euphoric recall" where first-time or early experiences make such a deep impression that we spend the rest of our lives chasing the feeling of that "first high". We remember and idealize the good parts. How good the fabric felt, not how afraid we were of being caught at that moment. Every time I try on a new item of clothing, improve my makeup, do something novel while dressed, or even recombine old clothes to create a new outfit, I get a little taste of that first-time magic. For me, it's a matter of living in the moment. Closing my eyes and appreciating for a few seconds how good the fabric feels right now.
I'm absolutely NOT trying to imply that crossdressing is addictive or harmful in the way that alcohol and drugs can be, just noting a universal human behavior. The same thing happens with romantic relationships.
