Update
You gals have motivated me to get off my backside and do something! I have always wanted to volunteer, but always found a reason not to.
The nest is now empty, I am finished working daily at 1:00 and I happen to love getting dressed! So I e-mailed the Salvation Army and made my pitch, I am a personable, well educated, experienced person who wants to volunteer my time, but I would like to do it dressed as a woman. The head of the area SA volunteer department e-mailed me back and we spoke on the phone. Her only concern was that I would dress appropriately for the office, which I assured her is basically my style anyway. I told her all I wanted was someway to exercise my need to present as a woman and give to others at the same time. For me, it's a way to make a day dressed as Kandi be just a day, not a dressing event. I want to just "be" and not have the whole time dressed only about being dressed. My hope is to just be treated as one of the women in the office, nothing more, nothing less. I have to say, there was a little thrill being addressed as Kandi in a telephone conversation.
Monday I have an meeting with her and I will be attending the meeting dressed as Kandi. It feels almost like a job interview. I have a cute outfit all picked out, a black sweater/white blouse combo with a red skirt, a gold necklace with corresponding bracelets. I cannot wait! Afterward, I figured hit a new high-end Goodwill (yeah, I know, the competition) woman's boutique while I'm all dolled up.
Should be a fun and interesting day. Of course, I'll let you know how it goes.

Actually, I'm a bit surprised given the Salvation Army's history (or lack of same) with the LGBT community. Maybe that glacier is melting also...

Kandi,
That sounds like a great opportunity! Good for you taking the initiative and contacting them and good for them being accepting.
I completely understand your words about doing something instead of having the dress-up be the event in it self. It makes a huge difference when you have purpose and you are focused on something other than just being dressed up. The good old "All dressed up and nowhere to go".
I hope your interview goes well and that they continue to be accepting.
Hugs

Good on you Kandi! So nice to see a person willing to give of themselves to help others! For me, it is volunteering at the local (and recently some not so local) LGBT community groups. In retirement I have become a mentor, teacher....and even an actress of video training modules!

Very cool and an awesome idea. Good luck, I hope everything turns out positive; which I'm sure it will.

Kandi, how cool would it be if you became an SA's SA. You would be the perfect SA for a CD to buy a pre-owned outfit from!

That is one of the best ideas I've ever heard! Please keep us posted on how it goes. Maybe you can start a trend :)

That sounds great, and like others have mentioned, I'm surprised you got such a great response from the Salvation Army of all people. Keep us posted!

Congrats Kandi. I always felt dressing with a purpose was immensely more satisfying. Glad you found a way to make a difference in the lives of others.
