hi again ladies,as one of my previous posts explained i have just come "out" to my
wife of 27 yrs about my cding. it hasn't gone well at all ;she is trying to understand
but at this early moment separation and possibly divorce are very possible' i have
agreed to seek counselling and am wondering if any of the southern ontario sisters
can give me the name of a toronto area psychologist who is knowledgeable about
transgender issues? if possible i would prefer to see a female. thanks in advance
for any help you can offer me.

If you go for "counseling", make very sure to take you Bride. This is a situation that involves BOTH of you, so neither one should be left out of it.

"Crossdressing" is not in the DSM, but gender dysphoria is. So, neither a psychologist nor a psychiatrist will not "treat" you for this.

If you feel that you are disphoric, and are seeking a transition, then you may wish to contact your local GBLT organization for a referral to someone who specializes.

I do hope that the outcome of this situation is what you truly wish for.

You might want to check out the Centre For Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) headquartered here in Toronto, and connect with their Gender Identity Clinic for the kind of help you seek:

To be accepted, however, you do need a referral from a primary care physician first.

Also, a word of warning - stay well clear of Dr. Kenneth J. Zucker who works there. He is one of those "old school" reactionaries who still believes in forcing gender-variant children into reparative therapy to conform to his expectations for male and female behaviour in children. He also considers transsexual women to be a "bad outcome" for gay men. According to one website, Zucker is a darling of the "ex-gay" movement because of his work "curing" gender-variant children.

Another resource you might consider looking into is the 519 Church Street Community Centre located in downtown Toronto, which offers a wide variety of support services for the transgendered community:

Another person to stay away from is Dr. Raymond Blanchard, also of the CAMH. Zucker and Blanchard are on the gender identity committee for the next revision of the DSM, and are advocating pathologisation of gender issues. There are a lot of therapists who disagree with this.

Dr. Zucker is in charge of the gender identity clinic at the CAMH. Chances are he teaches his discredited reparative aka repressive therapy to other therapists and consequently I would be very wary of any therapist working there and anyone else advocating this treatment.

A competent therapist will not try to judge you or impose their values on you. Rather, they try to get you to accept you as you are and guide you to your goals.

Your wife should go with you for at least one appointment.

Whoever you choose make sure they're not Psychoanalysts/Psychodynamic therapists or Humanistic psychologists. I'm appalled that what those people do qualifies as science.
