I get to dress as a woman for 1 day at work, is this mean spirited?

Its a fund raiser. If everyone under me brings in a certain amount, I have to dress as a woman for a day. But its more to humiliate and joke and see how funny I will look.

Is this not discriminatory in a way? Or is it not

If you replaced "dress as a woman" with dress as a visible minority, you can see what I mean.

I see what you mean. But what strikes me is the possible pressure placed on employees to bring in money, whether it's money raised from others or donated themselves. Not everybody likes to solicit donations, and not everyone can afford to give that certain amount. It's another kind of discrimination.

Well if this happens go to a make up artist to look your absolute best before you go into work. I can't see a problem if your look is clean, pretty and your not wearing a S!ut outfit.

Its only a couple of bucks and most of the people already have the required amount. The cost is spread out over many 100's of people so it works out to $2 a person. SO money is not the object

But I have to be at work at 8. Can I get make up put on and sleep in it?

I do hope you will go dressed presenting as the best possible representative of our group, even if they will have no idea. It is mean spirited, and indicative of how little society thinks of our situation. They are uneducated, many are unfeeling, and many more are haters. I hope that when you do this you will be well received and not subject to any derogatory cmments that may make you uneasy.

    Hugs, Barbara

Out of curiosity, how did this come about? Who suggested you should dress as a woman? There must be some history that we are missing. Are you 'out' to any of the people? I suggest, since this appears as a done deal, to solicit the assistance of a female co worker to assist you with the makeup and hair styling. Ask her to come in early and do your makeup. It should not take too long to change from male to female attire. I read in a previous post you're not into wearing dresses. For this occasion I would suggest wearing a dress and heels suitable for a business environment.

Be prepared for the employees to whip out their cell phone cameras for this event. Company newsletter?

    Have fun.

I wanted to dress a little ****ty or provocative! Knee high purple striped Thigh High Stockings with black Gogo boots, a short ( a little above the knee) black dress with a Sequin tank top, glitter on my face and purple lipstick.

There is no history, the women of the workplace decided this and though we would have fun with it. They also have to dress as men.

Money is always the object, or this event would not be happening!

No, you can't sleep in makeup. You'll have to do as a GG would by getting up earlier, depending upon how long it takes to get ready.

Now, my propensity would be to do my best to present in age- and job- appropriate attire such that I would be mistaken, at least at first, as a GG colleague. Of course, this is dangerous if you are worried about someone thinking that you do this a little too well! Most men who participate will probably treat it as "Dress Like a Hooker Day" or will make only a token attempt at it so my blending approach would, ironically, stand out a bit.

As others have suggested, enlist a GG to help you get made up, if you're unsure of your technique. As for attire, I agree with Eryn, go in an age and business appropriate style. You really should strive to look as professional and put together as possible. Give them their money's worth!

You agreed to it, didn't you? When everything was being decided was the time to raise your concern, even though you may not have been able to completely explain why. I think at this point, the die is cast...

Sounds like this could be fun! Your coworkers may look at this as a way to humiliate you, but how you handle it is completely up to you.

This is really a great chance to wow them. Do your nails nice, shave your leg and other hair (if you don't already) and plan a kick ass outfit that will knock them out, then tell everyone how much fun you're having. If you go through this with confidence and presence, you'll get the chance to send a real message about yourself.

I hope you embrace this chance, Frillee, you never know when you'll get another one like it.

I'm with Stephanie on this one. By enlisting the help of GG colleagues and wearing clothing similar to what they wear to the office you will "Legitimise" what you are doing. Dressing a bit tarty panders to the stereotype that CD'ers are all gay drag artists or a bit strange in the head.

Do your hardest to dress age appropriate and look sharp.
No over the top trashy stuff just do your best to look better than the most attractive female employee there.
They may even offer you a new position, did you consider that.

You need to tell us how this fundraser came to be. Who suggested it? Do you not want to do it? Why are you comparing it to dressing as a "visable minority"? What is a "visible minority" anyway?

I think the women will get the most fun out of it. I would just have a really good time with it and keep it light hearted. Good luck and give us pics of your final outfit when you can.

Im not sure . do your coworkers know about your dressing? If so knock their shoes off. Id go dress appropriate to your work surroundings. My coworkers knew of me dressing and one New years eve we use to always hang out at a casino lounge for the night. I went fully dressed up and got so many compliments. It may be better to met them someplace away from work that way management cant say anything.

If I got the chance to do this, I'd grab it with both hands. I wouldn't go ****ty, but I'd go about 20 years younger than my age (I'm 68!), certainly dress or skirt suit, but as near drop dead gorgeous (for daytime) as I could get; heels too, but not too high. And go around as though you own the place, if you're the boss, maybe you do!

You must tell us how it went, with pictures.

The OP used the term "visible minority", I was asking what she meant by the term.

As for the term "invisible minority", I have seen the term applied to hearing impaired people. One cannot see their impairment and they are a "minority".

Back on topic, I'm having trouble understanding the original post and was hoping the OP would explain it better.

I will add here it is mean spirited if you do not dress to impress.
It will be even more mean if there are no photos.

It is common to have fundraisers in a lot of places that are designed to slightly "embarras" the person who has to participate. Such as shaving a head if such and such team wins, and various other things. You can get all in a fuss about discrimination, or take it with the spirit ment, which is to have fun. I agree with Erin and others, dress your best for business. A nice dress, heels, wig and great makup. No you can't sleep in it, just get up early. Looking great will shock the h out of them. And carry yourself like a woman all day........grinnning inside because only you know how much your loving it.

    What an opportunity.

First I don't think this is a bad thing intended to degrade any group. I think the juxtaposition part makes it fun for folks. If you were old - dress like a teen, If you were a teen, dress like an old person. My theory doesn't work for "dress as a guy" because it's so simple and so many women already dress as men every day.

Don't go trashy. Get help to do it right. Day time outfit, make up and accessories, not club or evening gown. Age and setting appropriate. Look great. Get a great wig. Be classy.

Good luck. Can't wait to hear how it goes and to see some pics.
    Mary
