We know what the abreviation means ("significant other"), but when people use it, it's often confusing what they are really saying. I think "SO" is really some sort of politically correct term for boyfriend or girlfriend that conveniently leaves out the gender of that person so a gay or lesbian person isn't embarassed or forced to explain anything they may not feel like explaining.

It's fine when, for example, you're being invited to a party and told that it's OK to bring your significant other, but on web forums such as this one, when someone refers to their "SO" we don't know if it's a male or female and that may be important to the discussion.

The other question of course is, how "significant" is that "other"? As significant as a wife or husband or just someone you've been dating for a couple months? Again, this could be important in a discussion.
