I am a huge fan of magazines but I don't know anything about women's magazines. My SO doesn't really buy anything other then O and Real Simple (which by the way is also a great magazine for stay at home dads) So..what's the best magazine for a fashionable young women going into her forties? I would love to get an idea of what's new in fashion, get makeup tips, etc.

I like women's fashion magazines and regularly read In Style, Lucky and People's Style Watch. All have great suggestions for putting together outfits and how to spice them up. I always read them in someone's office while waiting for an appointment. If you decide to get a subscription, you may want to try Amazon and eBay. They sometimes have some fantastic offers because the publishers normally have to guarantee a certain circulation number (how many sold to the public) and sometimes need to meet those goals by offering them to resellers at a big discount.
Go to your local magazine sellers and browse through some of them (the magazines, not the sellers - haha). You'll find some that interest you.
Not to make a "funny" but I always found "Transformations" and "Girl Talk" interesting. Good articles besides the obvious.

I'm a health professional and while I worked in Germany a crowd called 'Lesezirkel' would come along each week, take all the waiting room mags. away and replace them with the latest issues, all with extra hard-wearing added grey covers. This totally solved the problem of outdated dog-eared mags. in the waiting room.
In our present specialist Dental practice we only have illustrated high-quality coffee table books, but on a separate little table we do have a few childrens' comics & storybooks for them in a corner.
Repartee is a good example of a CD mag., but not available on the High St, of course.

if you have an ipad, I would suggest getting "nextissue" app. It is a monthly subscription deal where for $14 or so, you get 70 or 80 magazines. About 50 of them are geared toward women, (cosmo, elle, lucky, etc.).

Of course you don't have to conform to any stereotypes. My wife and her sisters read the trashiest lightweight, celebrity, 'my tragic story' and fashion magazines they can lay their hands on and there all highly intelligent, college educated, some with phds. They like to read them as a way of relaxing from their complex lives. When I'm sent to buy some I try to get slightly more upmarket versions and I love the free samples of cosmetics they often have.
Of course I read them too particularly since I'm now the stay at home parent and can relate hugely to many of the stories and indeed the recipes.
My biggest problem is selecting which ones to buy. We have access to Irish, British and US women's magazines. It's overwhelming!

I read Cosmo... In Style and Glamour.... all great for fashion and some makeup tips...
I get Cosmo, but the writing is not that great. A few fashion/makeup tips are good. I like the writing better in Marie Claire. They also have good fashion ideas for a different/older age group than Cosmo.
In Style is still the most comprehensive. It covers everything, in all price points. Unless you're stinking rich, Vogue is just pretty pictures. (If you're stinking rich please PM your phone number).
O... I read two issues (the second to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.) Style by Oprah, Finance by Oprah, dating advice from Oprah, Oprah in every single picture. This months centerfold...you guessed it, Oprah. Oprah's favorite recipes. This months cover story 'How did K.T. Rowling get more money than me?' by Oprah. How to pick a puppy, by Oprah.

InStyle is too celebrity style centric for my taste and Lucky is a touch too oriented towards affluent young (twenties) women in the cities, Vogue is Vogue... I do pick up the September issue each year.
