    Reflections of a CD year

It is just over a year since I discovered and joined this extraordinary place - and it being generally a time of year to take stock and reflect on things, I found myself doing so over the past few days so I thought I’d share what a strangely progressive year it has been for me.
Let me say, for any newbies, you’ll find me using words like weird, strange, odd and similar, extensively. As much as this is a rooted part of me as with most here, I still find the whole ‘thing’ completely bizarre at times, but that shouldn’t be taken as meaning I think that we’re all weird (although some may be…) – just that I don’t understand the ‘why?’ of this, which is why I enjoy discussing it so much.
So – joining here a year ago, I posted an intro that was quite truthful (phew!) although I would have no idea how much my perspective of this community and condition would change and grow over time. I really enjoy the way we all interact and I love the diversity of views and quality of thought that (mostly!) goes into the dialogue – the diversity of people here makes this work as well and I have made some very splendid <virtual> friends, some of whom I one day hope to meet for real… It will happen

Cut to the chase! I hear you… I didn’t want to ramble on (like usual) but I wanted to highlight a few observations that have meant a lot to me and I think are important to this community…

Firstly – the diversity of how, why, where and which way we do this weird thing! And I do believe all are valid; that we rightly sit as some sort of community even though we may appear fragmented at times, diversity is something to be treasured and celebrated. I do believe (just my opinion) that the same core drive motivates us all, but it’s interpreted or grows in different ways, is influenced by our environment or upbringing, and has the range and differing strength of expression that we see here (but perhaps is under-represented in general). I think it’s so important for this forum and community to be inclusive and proactive in ensuring that every type of crossdressing expression is represented and embraced. There’s strength in numbers, sisters…

I have learnt so much of other folk’s heart-rending stories of conflict, acceptance, transition, non-acceptance and more… I’ve said before I wanted to do more and I know that I must find a way to do that. Again, I believe it to be important that we do more than just go shopping, or socialising (fun as that may be) – but I know activism’s not for everyone – I just think it will be more important for us in the future.

For the newbies: there is some great advice here, but ALL of it should be treated with care. It is, after all, only opinion, and even collective opinion here is not anything definitive or guaranteed for quality. There is also – I believe – a very subtle pressure; undertone, almost – that relates to that typical ‘group norming’ thing, where there is a tendency to want to emulate the overall group opinion in order to ‘belong’. I think this can be positively dangerous or catastrophic for some, so all I would say is that everyone should be very clear about their personal motivations for wanting to change something, do something new, whatever that is in their life - because it is THEIR LIFE – and not rely solely on the views they find here.

As to my earlier point about endlessly discussing the ‘why?’ and ‘what types we are’ and other apparently academic views, I’d say this to everyone: In the western world we owe much of the freedom and inclusiveness of society to people who were prepared to vigorously discuss, debate and finally agree on the way our culture should be structured, and if we can help progress nothing more than someone’s understanding of what we’re all about as a community, including all the fragments and segments that make up our eclectic mix, then all the chat and banter will have been worth it.

To finish on a positive, I’ve had some great practical advice on fashion (I must post some earlier disasters soon in the Gallery… if I dare…), makeup, hair, styles.. I’ve learnt so much from so many people who have rarely been anything but supportive and kind. I’ve pushed my own practical bounds to getting my Katey side out into the real world, and enjoyed it – and will doubtless do more - and in doing that I’ve learned more about myself and more importantly, managed to get to a level of more self-acceptance which, for many of us guilt and angst-ridden folk, is probably the biggest achievement of all. I still think I’ve a lot more to learn, and I still think it’s totally nuts at times, but I have a much better chance of doing that in harmony and having a reasonable amount of enjoyment in doing so.

Thank you, Members of cd.com, for all that you do every day to help those that are willing to come here, talk, listen, learn and be self-accepting.

Katey, each of your many posts have been well written, thoughtful, and thought provoking. Speaking for myself, and I suspect many others, I look forward to reading your viewpoints.

It's been a great year of discovery, growth, (self) acceptance, and fun. Thank you for taking me along on your adventure.

    Best wishes

You know, I have been feeling the same way lately and I just made a post about it before I read This one. the highlighted portion above describes me to a "T" right now. I feel lost, I don't know why it is that I have to do this, what this is exactly to me, I have been leaning towards "cos play" because I think that is the best way to describe how I feel about this.

We don't have inner women trying to get out so why is it that we go to such lengths to try and pull off the look of a woman? Like a cos player who goes to great lengths to make sure their characters costume of choice is dead on in the details, we do the exact same thing. We know we are CD so why do we want to be treated as a woman when dressed or even "pass" as a woman when dressed? .

URGH....thanks katey, now I have more thinking to do and it hurts lol

Happy "anniversary" Katie! I enjoy all your posts and I'm glad you help keep this forum running! I've learned more in the time I've been here than in all the previous years I've dressed. Keep telling us your experiences and views girl!

    Hi Katey,

I've not been on here very long, but like MsVal, I always appreciate your very thoughtful comments. We seem to share things in common - CDing (obviously!), in a long term relationship, in the closet. I'm also originally from Hampshire.

I look forward to you continuing to pass on your wisdom.

Only a year here and you're incredibly cute, thoughtful, considerate and, a moderator no less. I've been here 4 years and more and fall desperately short on all of those counts!

Would it surprise you to hear me say that WE designed our own living program before we came here? That is what we are living and why we are who we are. It's all a learning experience for feelings and emotions in the illusion of linear time. Enjoy.

    Katey,
There are as you say, so many well crafted and thoughtful dialogues posted here that do truly seek to explain the CD dilemma. It's these that help so many to understand why they lead the lives they do.

I take your point that there's a case to be made for a greater focus on activism that will push our "cause" into the public spotlight and bring about a better understanding and acceptance of a lifestyle that's just different and certainly not wrong. Public acceptance will be the assassin of guilt freeing many from the shadow of shame that blights many CD'ers lives.

Keep the faith; I hope the coming year allows your to express yourself more publicly and keep crafting those words of wisdom.

    Hi Katey,

First, happy anniversary, it feels like you have been here for ever, but IO beat you by a month before you joined. You have made a huge impact here as a member, moderator, and foremost a good , albeit virtual (for now) friend. You have offered many of us what we needed the most, either a pat on back, a sponsor to root us on, or just an ear to listen to.

Second, a very well thought out and insightful post. There is much there to digest and chew on. What rings true is that there is many factions in this wonderful community, all are very nice, some I agree with , others I do not. While I will talk and answer anyone, I have data mined (sorry for the IT term), and fiound my "kindred spirits", which I cherish and will hope to keep in contact with for the rest of my life, even if I decide to put all the clothes away for good.

For all the newbies here, there is a ton of information for get valuable knowledge on, but there is a definite undertone to fit the one mold, which I do not fit (primarily that I am still in the closet). But on the positive, it was that pressure that made me take that one foot followed by the other out that hotel room- and for that I thank you all. But to all of you newbies , it is your life, your experience, your past, your future, the pink fog is overwhelming at times, the post fog that comes with confusion, guilt, and depression is just as strong. So whatever it takes to make you happy , do it!

    Thanks again Katey

    Hell-o Katey,
What a fateful day it was a year ago when we both joined, and first met here huh?
I'm so happy we became friends that day, I would have never thought I could get
so attached to people I have never met.
You have really impressed me with your thoughtfulness, and wisdom
( not to mention your wise cracks )
Watching you go from the closet to public outings has been fun.
and dare I ask, What's next?
You know how that worked out for me!
I hope we can continue in our journey together for many years to come.
And someday we will uncork a bottle ( or 2 ) ( oh hell! or 3 ) together!
    As always,
    Much Love,
    Kristyn
BTW what else do you consider weird? Just curious.

Katey, you are a peach! As a newbie I had know idea that you are only one year on the forum and a moderator too. I have really appreciated your open, thoughtful, and wise approach to this "balagan" (a great Hebrew slang expression that sorta of means accepted, delightful, wild confusion) called CD\TG. Also I thank you again for your sensitive private messages to me. Your understanding that the goal is Inclusion is also right on.

    Hi Katey,

What a great post and has it been a year already? The observations are very astute and I believe sum up a lot of what passes muster on this forum . . . well said. However, I am still not going to forgive you for the "jean skirt"

    Katey,
As usual a great thread giving kind thoughts and useful advice to us all !
As I'm in the UK and joined the forum at the same time I wish we could share a real drink, as they say fact is stranger than fiction so it could happen !
I didn't read your intro but mine was dire !! So things have improved the only thing is we're all a year older and for some age makes it harder for partners to accept what we do ! Lets hope the younger members and the next generation have an easier time of it !
We all owe a huge thanks the existence of the forum, for bringing us together around the World and enable us to share our thoughts and help each other !

Again thanks Katey and happy first anniversary !!

Happy Anniversary Katey. I, of course agree with what everyone else has posted, but I'd like to know where you find the time to post nearly 3300 times in a single year.

Katey dear- you have done more to make me feel welcome here than you perhaps know, and even being told off by you is always a pleasure. You obviously dedicate a huge amount of your time to CD.com and I'm very glad to have this chance to publicly thank you.

    Thank you Katey!

Lorileah: FWIW I've been pounced upon about 6 times so far by Katey; only once by you! Clearly you are being out-pounced by this English upstart and you can afford to be a LOT fiercer.
