I think The cartoonist is trying to tell us they have a secret.

A bit “meh”, but not at all offensive.

At Easter season around here they often "Dress the cross", drape a purple length of fabric over the arms of a large cross, out front of the church. A running joke is "the preacher was seen cross dressing".

Even in the mainstream media back when.
Who would ever expect Dagwood to "equal" his wife Blondie for looks?

I’ve given this some thought over the years and from my Midwest perspective, I believe both. For us, they’re funny, because we can identify and have empathy with that brand of humor....but I never hear any comments from my friends about a cding joke, cartoon strip, or cartoon. One example, a friend of mine, told us he wears pantyhose when he hunts. The “teasing” that followed was cruel and not funny. Some have continued to tease him. I don’t know or care what he wears or if he cd, but I think he’s sorry he said anything. I saw a cartoon once showing a laborer with a hard hat and jackhammer. The balloon showed him in a dress. No one got it...I did and smiled.

    Haha
Principal Skinner "Oh no! Bart got into the school's cheer closet"
Homer "I'd say he's coming out of the closet"
Haha that always stuck with me. Wonder why

    Robbie,
I think it is very funny, don't overthink the cartoon at all.

I feel that cartoons that poke fun at us does help us feel how others perceive our lifestyle.

Stay positive about any cartoon and you will appreciate them even more.
    Work on your elegance,

Even comics of old had crossdressing around our superheroes
Jimmy Olsen was quite adept at crossdressing in emergencies
Such a skill we all should have

The first cross dressing cartoon I ever saw was in a December issue of Playboy. I thought it was humorous but had to keep my mouth shut and stifle the chuckle. The cartoon showed a man in front of a full length mirror donning a dress with the caption of "Now we don our gay apparel!"

One issue we face is educating the public who we are. Most of the negativity comes from (I think) people who have never actually seen a crossdresser, or transgender person. The cartoons posted on here, are not mean spirited, and may actually soften the impact of us on the public, so I'll say this helps. Or at least I like them anyway.

    Maybe not in person Steph.
With RuPaul's Drag Race on for it's 10th year, is there really anyway no one is not clued in to a man dressed as a woman.
How heavily advertised is that show across television viewing?
There was Milton Berle on practically every week in drag.
Flip Wilson most certainly was dolled up as Geraldine every week.
Klinger from M*A*S*H* gave us a man in a dress every week.
Bosom Buddies had 2 seasons of the closest we could have of an inside view to our world.
All of this in good fun.
Otherwise we had transvestites as assassins, killers, hookers and whatever else Hollywood could dream up for a man dressed as a woman.
