    What are the odds?

I go out en femme very rarely.

Yet three (three, count'em, 3) times when I have been en femme, my hotel key has stopped working. I have had to go to a hotel clerk, en femme, not at my best, usually late in the evening (on two of the three occasions) and ask for my room/elevator key to be reset.

Tonight, my first time out en femme in almost two years, was the third of the three occasions.

Yes, the hotel clerks have all been kind and professional, but it is still an embarrassment.

    What are the odds?

Just a thought, are you storing these cards next to something either magnetic or electromagnetic such as your phone that's effecting the card?

Some hotel have a Bluetooth key on their apps.

    Just a thought.

Sounds like about 100%! I always ask for two key cards..... put one in my purse and one in my bra! Just in case. Lol. Funny.... I had a geology professor in college who kept a pen knife in her bra. Every time we went out in the field... I enjoyed asking to borrow her knife just to watch her fish around in her bra for it.

My spider sense suggests that dropping your key card into a purse that also holds your cell phone will almost certainly deactivate it. A great opportunity to interact with the human(s) at the front desk.

Karren, I love your idea about a second card key in the bra. And funny story about the professor.

Yes, it may have been too close to a cellphone last night, as I was using a small clutch. I did not know that was a problem, maybe because my phone and wallet (with the hotel keycard) are apart in male mode.

One good thing about last night: I got two "beautiful"s and one "cute" from passers by. The hotel clerk (thankfully) made no comment.

Yup 2 keys always this is something all veteran hotel dressers do. Also the good news is after awhile it will not be embarrassing just an inconvenience. Enjoy!

I used to be a Night Auditor at a major hotel chain and have run into pass key problems before. Next time you check in and get your room key ask the desk man to authorize your key in "universal" mode. Now, this basically gives you a pass key that will open every door in the place. Your pass key should open the meeting room and the pool room as well. But the point is often times for who knows why a single pass key for a single room sometimes hangs up or locks up and won't compute. The universal function clears all that. We weren't suppose to tell guests they were given an "open" pass card (the same type we at the desk all had to gain entry into any room or door) to keep them from utilizing that function. The "universal" function for some reason straightens out your problem for individual doors for some reason.

Yes! This sounds like a perfectly reasonable request for the paranoid, security-obsessed era we live in. I love it.

This was my first thought! “She’s got something in her purse that’s resetting the card”

Cell phones shouldn't affect the mag strip on keycards. If they did, hey would also affect your credit cards. I'm guessing that the clutch you carry might have a magnetic clasp very near where you habitually put your keycard when you go out.

Odds are apparently good for that kind of thing. The VERY first time I went for a drive, it was just around my neighborhood (was going to drop some mail off at the box down the block), I get to the end of the block, headlights click on, and a cop starts following me around the neighborhood.

I aborted the mail run and returned home, pull into the driveway and the cop blows by my house.

It put a check on that behavior for quite some time.

My small camera means I rarely have to carry a cell phone in my purse. My camera hasn't damaged a hotel key yet!

Yes, I know. I'm one of those old fashioned fogeys that goes out to meet people and have fun when dressed.

I used to think the same. Turns out they are very different methods. One is intended to be permanent, the other reusable. I've erased more than I care to remember.

I had read a post about someone being outed because of a fire alarm in their hotel while dressed. I figured what are the odds of that happening to me - pretty low I thought. Of course a few weeks ago when I was in Tampa, I was on the 4th floor and the dang fire alarm went off while I was trying to get undressed. So I had male clothing on and false eyelashes and lipstick on. I thought doh, I will just have to burn up so I quickly removed the makeup before heading down the stairs. It was a false alarm but a fire truck came up to the building so I let the 3 firemen in the door which had to be opened with the hotel key. I would have been a little embarrassed to have been seen with my overdone makeup. Fully dressed I would have been ok with, it just felt weird only having my face feminized. Anyhow like they say **** happens.

This has happened to me both in drab and en femme. It has even happened AFTER I realized that my cell phone was wiping my entry card. I think I just got the wrong card once or twice.

Its something you can count on and plan for. I almost always check in in girl mode anyway, so the front desk isn’t surprised.

No reason to be embarrassed as long as you are wearing more than a towel!

I've learned to always get two key cards, and even then I've been locked out when both keys failed. Sometimes stuff happens, and I've learned not to sweat the small stuff.

Sort of like "what are the odds that, after driving unbeknownst with a tail light out for a month, you get pulled over and notified that one time you were dressed up." Maybe that's why some cd'ers like going to casinos -- to beat the odds.

Electrical engineer here. I second (or third?) the idea that a magnetic clasp in your purse has gotten too close to the magnetic stripe on the card. I doubt that a mobile phone would do it.

I avoid the problem by checking in en femme. Yes, I use my male name, credit card, and drivers license.

Oh, and by the way, I?ve had key cards stop working, but it?s always computer problems, usually because the desk clerk messed something up, not because there was anything wrong with the card. The code needed to open the door is changed when you check in, and can be changed again if the management does something weird.

This is precisely why I always check my car lights, including brake lights, before I ever head out while crossdressed. Talking with a cop while dressed is NOT something I want to do.
