When we still lived in NJ we were members of a support group that met at a hotel.
The staff there were Very friendly to us and treated us fabulously. The lounge was almost our second meeting room and everyone, including the patrons, made us feel completely at home.
The other place that was wonderful was the diner we frequented after our meetings. The manager treated us like royalty when we came in and the wait staff would almost argue over whose section we should sit in as they all loved us. All of the staff would come by to talk to us, sit with us a bit and just have fun. One night there was a small group of men that were there after some dirt races. They sat across from us and began making comments, not loudly but enough that we and the staff heard them. Someone said something to the manager and he came right over and chastised them for their actions telling them if they didn't stop they'd have to leave. They complied and the night went on uneventfully.
There are some wonderful people in the world.

Mad Myrna's in Anchorage, AK. Very freindly and supportive of CDs and the LGBT community. They have a drag show every Friday. Daphne Doallthechores, the drag show emcee also hosts many charity events around town.

Probably Chez Est in Hartford CT. I practically grew up living across the street in the 80?s and I admired the scene back then.

    Hi Sabine

I have been meaning to type up the list of places I have been. Will try to do that soon. One thing if I may point out is that even at the same bar, your experience can vary considerably just depending on when you go. A place might have only a few people on a week night and could be packed on a weekend for a different experience just from that aspect alone. I have been lucky though in that every place I have visited while dressed was accepting. Some places are a lot more fun than others.

Freddie's Beach Bar, Arlington, VA. We're always welcomed there.

It bills itself as a straight-friendly gay bar.
Hi, I'm Steffi and I'm a crossdresser... And I accept and celebrate both sides of me. Or, maybe I'm gender fluid.

My absolute favorite place was a lesbian bar called Forestview Lounge that closed not too long ago.
They had a few cool dogs you could pet and sit on a couch, or outdoors on the patio or at the bar.
You could play pool, video games, and interact with all the guys as they were girls.
Being with the opposite gender dressing as the opposite gender was the most fun I ever had as a girl.
The flirting is so fun and silly at the same time and some of the bi girls were stunning and so loving.
I was so sad the owner died and the place got sold. I often wonder where did all the patrons go?
Today we have Big Shots Piano bar and restaurant in town and a lot of us girls go because our local Transformations shop sponsors a week night get together.
I have been there when the Red Hat society girls were having a outing, it was a hoot!
Good food, live music, and a place where girls like to mingle, makes for a fun venue!

Triangles in Danbury CT...It long since closed. Great parking, monthly girls night events...
Escapism isn't necessarily bad, but is definitely unhealthy in the long term. While helpful in the short term, things will degrade over time. At some point, the escapee will have to face the issue. Things simply blowing over isn't really going to happen in many situations.

I recently started going to nice restaurants that have a bar area I have done this several times this year a couple times I had some good conversations with the female bar tenders but it would be nice to visit with other like minded people. Any suggestions in the MPLS are appreciated.

I have been to the Capri Lounge in Augusta, Georgia. Although a gay bar, they are straight friendly. I have always enjoyed being there and have had positive experiences with both staff and patrons.

Jill - I follow a blog by Hannah McKnight who is also in the Minneapolis area. In addition to her blog she also started a group called the Minnesota T-Girls who meet regularly and seem to be very much a social club. You might look her up. I would love to have a similar group near where I live.

Fantastic spot. It's a few minutes away from DC and one of the friendliest places on earth. At this point, even the neighborhood blue-collar dive bar can surprise you with friendly, open-minded people. Ive been to several in my travels and they never cease to amaze me. Someone mentioned restaurant bars. That was my usual hangout pre-covid. Met a lot of wonderful people there. Got into a lot of adventures and trouble there, too. Let's just say the world is surprisingly full of curious hetero guys.

For those who are in the Boston area, there are several welcoming places. One that I frequent with my friends is Oye's in Reading. It is a restaurant/bar and we feel very comfortable there. For a more fun spot many Tgirls talk about the Breezeway Pub in Manchester. It is a gay bar, but many girls have had good things to say about it. Pre pandemic that had weekly drag nights.

I think acceptance at bars can be very random due to the tribal nature of the business. Watering holes tend to have a very specific constituency, and if you aren't part of that group it's really a coin toss. That said, in recent years I have found people to be generally very welcoming, even in the most unlikely places. One time I went into a biker bar in Massachusetts and it was like a movie cliche where even the music stops when a stranger walks in. Once the bartender, a guy who looked 70, poured me a drink, everyone went about their business and a few even complimented me on my looks and on how brave it must be to go out in public dressed. I smiled and nodded and carried on.

There are two ways to answer your question, and it depends on whether when one is out, they only go to LGBTQ friendly bars or to any bar in the area.
Thanks to a great friend that held my hand while first going, was go start with the LGBTQ bars/restaurants and then to any bars/restaurants in the SF neighborhoods.
To answer your question, probably Blush Wine Bar in the Castro for LGBTQ bar. Over the years my preference was to go to a bar/restaurant in a few of the SF neighborhoods and became
goods friends with the bar/restaurant owners, staff and customers. It was this acceptance that I less frequented the LGBTQ bars/'restaurants, better to expand one's experience.

I can't say there is any one bar that has outdone all others I have been to. There are a lot of good places to go. I meant to post it here, but accidentally posted on another thread so I won't repost it. I listed the 24 bars and clubs on Charlotte's recent thread "where do you go" and what I thought of each. A number of them are really great - at least pre-covid. I hope the good ones have all survived the lack of business during the last year.

This is the thread I posted my list at:

I second Rachael's complete post. Any bar is a great bar in and around SF. All time favorite is Blush Wine Bar across the street from the famous Castro Theater.

"The Glades" in Honolulu,Hawaii. Was taken on sight seeing tour by navy friends wife. Great floor show, very pretty show girls and waiters. All of which were males. many from the mainland. The sailors wife had one of the performers set with us briefly and when the performer got up she leaned over and gave me a rather long wet kiss! Can't say that I didn't like it. Course my escort had to tease me about it.

'Bout Time in Austin, TX. At first it was a friendly, everyone's welcome dive bar. Then it moved to a newer, more upscale facility. Same friendly vibe though. Bigger dance floor, bigger/better bathrooms and a nicer parking lot. Trying to walk in heels in the lot at the old location was a pain. Had to use the spare pair in the car a couple of times.

It was an Austin fixture for a long time, but it couldn't last through the mandatory COVID shutdown. I do have a lot of fond memories though.
