    Artificial nails

I have always bitten my nails. I have always envied women with long fingernails. I have always wanted to try wearing a set of artificial nails, preferably red!

During the recent holiday season, I took the opportunity to ask my SO to put a set of artificial nails onto my hands. Red, of course! We had no social commitments to worry about, the weather was bad ? and so I found myself being able to fulfil a lifelong dream. The results were impressive! I took no photos, though.

Virtually the first thing I did with them was to open a tin of tomatoes which had a ring-pull top. The act of putting a thumb nail under the rim of ring-pull caused it to bend out of shape. Not badly, but enough to spoil the look of perfection I wanted.

Using my computer keyboard, I found that I had to change to angle of my fingers, which are naturally curved due to years of playing piano. The tips of the nails did not make for positive contact with the keys. I had to flatten my fingers so that the pads could make contact and allow me to type properly.

The same went for the way I used my mobile phone.

After a few hours, I noticed that the cuticles on some of my fingers were sore. I put it down to either a chemical reaction to the glue or the contact they had with the plastic nails. It only lasted a day or two, however. Not a big issue.

I lost the left thumb nail on the very first day. I think it was when I was washing dishes. I never did find it. Apparently, the soap tends to loosen the glue. I should have used gloves.

The next day, my SO trimmed the nails to a length a millimetre or so longer than my real ones. The imperfection of the thumbnail disappeared! Life got a lot easier, and I was actually quite pleased with the effect. My hands still looked good, and I was able to function normally. I could not bite my nails! The rest of the holiday turned into an experiment to see how long the nails would stay in place.

I had to go out a few times. I was conscious of the colour, but also mindful of the many comments read here about the public not noticing, or at least being too polite to pass a comment. A visit to a bank put all this to the test. An official helped me deposit a cheque in an automatic machine. At one point I had to enter a PIN and there is no way he could have failed to notice my nails. He said nothing. I did not feel embarrassed.

Six days passed. I went about my everyday business. No-one I had any dealings with had anything to say. I did not bite my nails. I lost only one more nail; the one on my left middle finger. In the same period, my SO lost five of her artificial nails, applied at the same time as she had done mine. Eventually, the time came for her and me to socialise with some friends who know nothing about Gale. I had to work out how to remove the red works of art.

This was when I discovered that one way of doing so was to soak my fingers in soapy water. Another was to soak them in acetone. I found a bottle and poured enough into a plastic bowl to cover the tips of all my nails. Ten minutes later, I was able to prise them all off by hooking the tip of a nail under the bottom edge of each of them and gently lifting them off. Because, of course, my real nails had all grown a bit over the week and the bottom edges of the artificial ones no longer were flush with my cuticles.

The tips of my real nails had all grown pleasingly long. A quick file, and they looked really good. Sadly, they no longer look that way. The habit of biting my nails is too strong!

I have the same problem with broken ragged nails, but I work on bicycles and lawnmowers for a local charity group so I'm forever breaking them there. And if they're not breaking they also cop a lot of grease, oil and petrol which does them no favours.
Nice real nails are a pipe-dream at this point so I'm going to give artificial ones a go. Just have to pick the right time - they wouldn't go down well at this charity or with some of my friends. Even then I'm going to have to trim them back a bit.

    Gale,

Yep, long false nails do make you alter how you use your fingers. It makes you appreciate why GG's wearing them hold and move their hands differently.

One thing I found difficult was picking coins up off a flat surface and of course I found this out when I dropped a coin on the floor while at a checkout with a queue behind me.

The way I remove my nails is with a metal nail file. Carefully I insert the tip of the file under the side of the nail and then again carefully move it side to side and the nail will prise off.

If you're using superglue to hold them on with you can get superglue remover both to clean up your own nails and the false ones so they can be reused. Make sure you follow the instructions.

Congrats on the artificial nails and red is a nice bonus! One question, do the artificial nails damage the nail bed of your own nails?
I was a lifelong nail biter until my nail tech saw them and rounded them off and said now there is nothing to bite, it worked and I have not bitten them in years

Gale, I also bit my nails, that was until covid occurred and got over that habit. However, when my nails grew out, they tended to break or split. So despite not bitting them, I still needed to keep them relatively short. I have always used artificial nails, though I tend to go with pink French tip nails. I had trouble with them popping off until I got the correct glue and since then I have had more problem getting them off than loosing them.

They used to sell adhesive backed, stick on, red, paper nails at the 99 Cents store. They were perfect to stick on for a photo shoot then toss.

But, I haven't seen those for sale there or anywhere for years!

They sound like they're just what I need, Sherry.
There are quite a few of those $2 stores near me, so I'll definitely check it out.

Gala, It is great to hear you were able to wear them for an extended period. I too had a similar experience in losing a few nails after washing my hands. The adhesive of the brand I purchased (a cheap set) was not very strong.
I am just a guy who enjoys wearing women's clothing and there is nothing wrong with that.

I love messing around with fake nails. It shows in my avatar. That is my hand. It sure takes minimal tasks to a new level. Just pulling up a zipper takes some thought an engineering!

Oh yeah the let's get really long nails it will be cute and fun. Yes I've been there myself. Nails like three quarters of an inch off my finger tips. I wont lie it was nice and did look really cute. The two weeks I had them that long was hell trying to do anything.

Now that you’ve seen it’s both fun and it really isn’t much trouble to wear them in public, I would suggest trying gel extensions. They are amazing, I love wearing them. You really need to have them professionally removed, so if something comes up and you need a quick removal, it’s not going to happen. Just make sure of your schedule. The longest I’ve worn them is 17 days. By then most women would just get a filler done due to natural nail growth, but it was fun while it lasted. They looked freshly polished for all 17 days.

Yeah, I just play around the house and wear them for a day or two. I do too much manly stuff to wear them any length of time. Wrenching on cars, woodworking, or like last week, cutting out a kitchen wall and replacing a leaking sewer pipe! Even short "male" nails take a beating!

I can actually grow my natural nails quite long. However, it is quite difficult to grow all 10 long enough without breaking one or two. There is also a tipping point. At one length, I can do almost everything normally. Then, a few days later, everything goes off kilter. It shows up first in my keyboarding when I start hitting two keys at once, the one I want to hit and the one above it. And this is on a keyboard, not on a phone.

I went to a salon and had a nail tech put very long dipping nails on me. They're kind of like acrylic extensions. They were really beautiful and exotically long. I couldn't do hardly anything normally. I ended up cutting them shorter after 3 days.

Hi, I'm Steffi and I'm a crossdresser... And I accept and celebrate both sides of me. Or, maybe I'm gender fluid.

I use press on nails and the only issue I had with them are they put a lot of pressure on the nails because the curvature didn't match my natural nails. They caused my fingers to feel numb just under the nail surface. I could endure it but they felt a bit uncomfortable at times. I could not type at all and a pinky fingernail eventually fell off, I think it was because I didn't press down for long enough when I applied them. They felt so wonderful to wear, made me feel ultra-feminine, and they really completed the look I was going for!

When I went to remove them, all I did was soak them in hot water for about 5-10 minutes, which softened the adhesive tabs, and I was able to easily peel them off. I once tried the acetone trick, which did remove them, but ended up melting them off! Had to throw them away of course!! Next time though, like you did, I am going to try the hot soapy water to see how that works.

    They do look nice, Linda.

Further to my earlier comment, I did manage to find and buy some stick-on nails like the ones Sherry described but acrylic, not paper, today - in bright red. They had other colours but the red was the nicest. They are only cheap ones, but will serve my purpose.
Now I just need to arrange an opportunity to try them out. I don't want to put them on only to have to remove them after a short time, so I am thinking of asking my one male friend who knows about Wendy if I can 'borrow' his place for a day and an evening, where I can do the whole thing, with nails and makeup and all, and not have to rush back into male mode or be disturbed by people I'm not 'out' to. He does not mind if I dress there, and I have done so in the past - I'll just need to organise a day when he is free. He has also said that he will take some decent pics of me in a different setting to my bedroom or bathroom, which is my only option at home.
I might see if my S-I-L wants to come and meet Wendy at the same time. She has seen pics, which she liked and said I looked pretty, but has not met Wendy in the flesh.

Like Steffi, I tend to keep my nails long. Keeping them manicured can be a task, but the advantages of longer nails help me in several ways. I don't put any polish on them, but I have been temped more than once.
I like myself, regardless of the packaging that I may come in! It's what is on the inside of the package that counts!

Thank you for the tips. I replaced the acetone and bought more artificial nails. Fun planned for sometime in the next few weeks!

It is easy to adapt to having long nails. There's a lot of silly YouTube videos: I tried long nails for a day or I tried high heels for a day. In one day they're going to be awkward and cumbersome give them a week and you pretty much forget you have them. Not really but you'll be doing things you might initially have thought were impossible. The first time you do each new task is a little challenging but then you figure it out. You learn to slow down and grab things more deliberately or whatever you need to do. After a year my nails are short right now. I'm doing some Home Remodeling. It took me a week or more to get used to them being so short. LOL that's how it gets.

I totally understand the urge to bite the nails, i have done it my whole life. Recently when i told my SO of me trying to break the habit of chewing my nails she suggested, that when my nails are long enuff we go have our nails done together. I havnt chewed my nails in 3 weeks and a excited about our "nail day". Maybe this is something you and your SO can plan and do and will get you to stop chewing your nails!!! Afterall nails are to sexy NOT to have them!!

I have always kept my nails well trimmed and clean. The last time I trimmed them, though, I decided to keep them as long as they were, and just shape the edges for a more femme look. I love how they look and do enjoy filing them. We?ll see how long I can keep them before cutting them. So far, my wife hasn?t noticed or said anything if she did.

When I'm not crossdressing I'm messing around with my motorbikes, gardening, etc and I've always found I have to keep my nails nice and short otherwise they'll split. And that's with wearing gloves when working, which I always do to help protect my hands. So, I either paint the nails or use false nails that glue on. I typically do my nails at the weekend, as that is when I mainly dressup as a form of relaxation. Painted nails are nice if you can get a nice colour and one that suits you, like lipstick. Also, like most things in life, painting nails is a skill and takes time to perfect.

Hi Gale. I used to bite my nails really short, my wife hated it, I couldn't stop as I'd done it for over 40 years. After my wife found out I crossdressed, she suggested painting my nails and I immediately stopped biting. They grew and she painted them crimson for me and they looked gorgeous. I've not bitten them since. She sometimes paints them for me when we go out, usually grey or silver and no-one comments. No one cares...

My toenails are always red or pink and when we went on holiday, I asked for them to be painted black and they looked great. But when we went into this communal hot tub, this guy had his toenails painted red. He was with his wife and didn't try to hide it. My wife noticed this and winked at me and I felt underdressed and jealous, in the circle of folk I hang round in, no one seems to care.

Bottom line Gale, if wearing false nails looks and feels nice for you, go for it. These days, my nails are even with the tip of my fingers and look lovely, I take great pride in keeping them nicely manicured. I hope you can stop biting and keep yours looking good too.

I bought a pack of 100 fake nails at the Dollar tree some years back---Found ALL my sizes in one box. I cut and shaped them to my desired length , painted them and glued them on with lines of superglue along the length of the nails---They work quite well, stay on well, and are easy to take off with polish remover.----AND I can reuse them later a few times.

My nails are long and I have grown accustomed to them as far as using my hands without difficulty.

Occasionally when at work the length of my nails does come up

In guy mode, my nails are short and trimmed. Once Destiny comes out, I like long or extra long artificial nails. I?ve gotten used to them and they don?t bother me one bit. Texting is finally getting easier.
