Thumbs up The Gender Genie or You Are What You Write. But is "it" right??

Okay kids, I found this really cool thingy. You type text into it and it predicts the author's gender. And, statistics show it being correct more than 80% of the time. In fact I typed text in from GG's and GB's from both sides of our little fence and it was right most of the time. With a couple of exceptions (if you don't find out who you are by using it; I'll be happy to tell you). It also found me to be male twice and I was an "Unknown" gender once. He he he. It's really cool and I want to read more about it. As an interesting lil' test I'm going to plug what I've written here to see what it says about me gender once more. Try it and share what you think. This is fun and interesting I think!

    The Gender Genie:

    Male Score: 257

Nope (sorry ), her scores were closer together than yours. Plus hers were in a medical field dominated by male terminology.

Thank you Gender Genie. Does this mean I get 3 wishes now?

    Whew!
I tried some of my longer winded posts from the forum (sorry girls!) and a couple of company press releases I have just completed for a trade show in January and hit female each time! I wasn't too surprised about the posts but a bloody press release on technology?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Oh well, is it right Kew?

    Thanks, Kew!

That was interesting for me because I was educated to be a writer, but never seriously pursued it, plus there's that whole cd, tg thing that rules my life, too. I wrote about 300 words, checked the results (female), and then I backed up, added enough to make the 500 words suggested, checked, and still came up female. My only surprise was that my score wasn't more lopsided favoring the female gender...

    The gender genie is uncanny!

This actually was the second pass at the Genie. The first one I type a stream of concience thing about me (Tris) when I was twelve years old and an accident I had with my bike. All complete fiction, but I told it from my feminine point of view. The genie pegged me as a female on that one too.

This one was an email I sent to a friend also from my female point of view. And again the genie was convinced I was a girl. God, that feels good!

I think the program is looking for keywords and phrases that define passive versus active voice (tech writer talk). I think the program assumes that if the author is writting in passive voice then, since many females speak passively, then the author must be female.

BTW: Since the genie was convinced I was a girl, I didn't have the heart to disappoint him and idicated that the author was indeed a female. Well, I am!

    Words: 865

(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

    Female Score: 905
    Male Score: 872

I don't get it. I submitted two stories and I came up female both times, even though the second story was overloaded with violence, vulgarity, and incomplete sentences. The program chose as its keywords mainly prepositions. It doesn't make sense.

Well it's based on an algorithm that attempts to predict the gender based on syntax structure. Content is not a factor.
