I think the key words here are:

The best thing to do is break out a phonebook for the city you want to check out and call the stores you think you may want to go to. This way they don't know who you are by face and can ask how they feel about you trying clothing on! If you do this, you will like the results. You can find out what time the store is slowest if you like, if some clerks by name like to help guys try on the stuff, etc.

Seriously, this is the best way.
