    What Do You Prefer?

    Gurls,
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in the past...?

What term do you prefer when discussing our lifestyle somewhere?

EG - I was in Psychology class in college and we were discussing Gender Identity Issues. When the T word (transvestite) was used I blared out without thinking "I hate that word it is so demeaning sounding!".

The class just stared at me in disbelief, then I realized what I had said,LOL!

So what do you prefer?TV/CD/TG/gurl or something else?

    thx for reading

    Penelope

If I have to be in a box, put me in the "crossdresser" box.
    "Transvestite" sounds far to clinical.

Yes it has been mentioned and discussed many times. Including just in the last week or so. That thread even had a poll.

(Hey mods, I'm not trying to be a whiner/whinger but more stickies might reduce the number of repetitve threads. Either that or perhaps more actively concatenating threads. That might work as well)

Have I also not said that "This Thing of Ours" makes some of us a bit "Barefoot in the Head"? Well, it does.

Penelope, I'm the exact opposite to you. I much prefer Transvestite, or Trannie, to Crossdresser. I dont particularly like the term Crossdresser.

I joined a Crossdressing Support Group many years ago. The acronyms that were used then and to this day are some what different than the ones that are used on this site. I always then thought that the different terms could be regional or even national. For instance, G.G. always ment Guy Girl.....and likewise R.G. always ment Real Girl. The term Crossdresser seems to fit what we do pretty good, however I hate being referred to as a Drag Queen.....

Etymologically crossdresser is the same as transvestite but I like the sound of the latter word more. Transvestite sounds a little harsh.

When discussing matters that apply to the whole transgender community I say TG

When talking about ppl who Crossdress I say "Crossdresser"

When talking about ppl like myself I say TS/transsexual.

It was my understanding that the word transvestite was the clinical term for a person who crossdresses for the purpose of sexual excitement brought on by wearing the clothes of the opposite physical sex. So, if there's not sex thing there, where does that leave us? I guess with either crossdresser or transgender. Gender-bender maybe? I don't know, but I rarely do anything sexual while dressed.
Some causes of crossdressing you've probably never even considered: My TG biography at:http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/...=1#post1490560
There's an addendum at post # 82 on that thread, too. It's about a ten minute read.
Why don't we understand our desire to dress, behave and feel like a girl? Because from childhood, boys are told that the worst possible thing we can be, is a sissy. This feeling is so ingrained into our psyche, that we will suppress any thoughts that connect us to being or wanting to be feminine, even to the point of creating separate personalities to assign those female feelings into.

Crossdresser is a good term in normal conversation. In my psychological readings "Transvestite", in its most technical sense, is a crossdresser who is NOT Homosexual. In a slightly less formal sense it refers to a Crossdresser who CDs for fetish based resons.

Crossdresser is likely the best term for casual conversation, as it gets the point across, without introducing the clinical undertones and implications that "transvestite" may evoke---which can have different meanings, depending on the technical formalities of speech, and which can also differ on different sides of 'the pond".

Same here. Sarah, you're sooooo smart!

I don't like the "Chix with Dix" label at all. That's such a tiny part of who I am, thankfully.

dictionary explanation; Transvestite: one who wears the clothes of the opposite sex.

A person who dresses and acts in a style or manner traditionally associated with the opposite sex.
Transgender: person having physical characteristics of one sex and psycological characteristics of the other.

Ive looked online and I cant find any dictionaries explanations of transvestite in the 'clinical' sense that is mentioned previously.

For forty some years I called myself a transvestite and was satisfied with that. I didn't adopt the word crossdresser until I joined this forum. I think it is good to use crossdresser because it is a more accessible word for the public to accept (eventually?).

I could not care less which of transvestite, crossdresser, TV or CD to use, although I would prefer people not label me at all!
