"Christmas Catalogs & Holiday Wishbooks" is a great site with old catalogs. They show the Sears 1951 Fall and Winter and on page 171 they show a full satin day dress! Lots of rayon, taffeta, satin and nylon outfits back then. Check it out-impressive!
