I considered it several times but never did.
Dad wanted me to go into the Navy out of High School (He was Army and I guess his perception is that the Navy got better food & showers). Recruiters were pushing nuke school. But the test was so easy (basic ASMD math) it left me thinking, do I want to be responsible for a NUCLEAR REACTOR with just any idjit that can pass this test? It really did not leave me with a lot of confidence. I wanted to fly but they were talking 6 year commitment in return for a flying assignment... do you know what the next 6 years is to a 17 YO? E-friggin-ternity!
I went to school instead and paid my own way.
Graduating a few years later and starting to work in the real world, I realized I had the time and money available to achieve the flying dream and earned a pilot certificate. So there I was, 25-ish with a BS degree and a PPASEL certificate. I wondered if there is anything I can do with the USAF. I spent a lot of time considering the question but never took action. Then I turned 27 and the window closed. That is my road not taken.
I never signed on the dotted line, but I respect and thank those of you that did. Thank you all for serving. This household flys the Stars and Stripes today for you.
