The other day I bought some new male shoes, and as I was walking down the street I noticed how they sounded very much like ladies heels. It was a bit disconcerting, and it got me thinking about self-consciousness. In this particular instance it was amusing, but if I had really been wearing heels it would have made me somewhat nervous.
I'm sure many of you have been in a situation where you are feeling self-conscious, and hear a sudden burst of laughter from a group of people, or a stranger walks up to you to ask for directions etc. I can well imagine that if you are dressed up as a female, this combination of self-consciousness and random events must be quite frightening, even though the two are in fact unrelated.
