Donna, I can't add much more than what everyone else has contributed to except this - I had my ears done about 5 months ago. I had the starter studs in for the recommended 6 weeks and only had two comments - one from a former teammate I used to play rugby with and a North Jersey Italian friend (read mafia-type). Both discussion went something like this:

"Hey, you got your ears pierced!"

    "Yup."

    "Cool."

And that was it. Never another question in five months.

Since taking the starters out, I got two 18 gauge glass piercing retainers from the local piercing shop. They slide in nicely and keep everything open and I wear them out most of the time and they are virtually invisible (and held in place with a silicon o-ring). Since then I have seen ex-military friends, immediate and extended family and not a peep out of any of them. Maybe they noticed but no one really cared.

Frankly, I was the biggest scaredy cat all these years having angst over getting them pierced and now I realize what a total non-issue it is.

On the plus side, a GG friend who knows all about me commented how much "hipper" I look in boy mode with the piercings.

It's your ears and your life - most people are too wrapped up in their own existence to even notice such a minor detail.

My first therapy session after getting them even baffled my therapist. They said once or twice through the session: "You look different" or "Did you get collagen in your lips?" As I was walking out the door I pointed to the starter studs in plain sight and they said they did not even notice them.

If you want them - go for it sister.

Had both of mine pierced just about 1 year ago at age 60, was not allowed to wear earings in my previous job but now that I am retired I enjoy the increase in earings choices I now have. It was barely noticed by my friends and family and when I was asked I used the job excuse and added I always wanted to do it (the truth). The conversation usualy ended there. As others have said "don't worry".

Girl just go for both ears! Have you seen what the young kids are doing with lip rings, nose rings, eyebrow, nose and nipple piercing? Pierced ears are almost "old fashioned" anymore.

Can't give you any help on hiding them, you could take my aproach, Flaunt it.

My ears have been pieced since child hood, 30 years now. And I have stretched them out to a Zero gauge, about the diameter of a standard pencil.

I am almost always wearing some type of body jewelry in ears..

I have had my left ear pierced since I was 18, 2 holes actually, I will be 54 this month, I have had some flack about it over the years, but nothing I can not handle. I would love to have my right ear pierced as well, but have not been game to do it in fear of the flack I would get from family, friends and work mates. Well my wife has gone to stay with her sister for a few weeks and both kids 18 and 20 are also staying with their friends, so I thought I would try piercing my own ear. I know it would by simpler to have it done professionally, but this way if I let the holes close up I have not wasted any money. It took about half an hour to make the hole only 1 for now and put a gold sleeper in it to match the other side. I then went to work and believe it or not no 1 even noticed, then about a half hour after I get home my daughter turns up with her girl friend to get some clothes. They were here for about 2 hours and neither of them noticed.
    I'm devastated

You have to leave earrings in for at least 6 weeks before you take them out and then you are supposed to keep something in the holes for at least 6 months so they do not close up. I have seen where someone had clear plastic studs that replace the earrings. The problem being trying to put them in place of the starter earrings.

I just had both of mine done in October I love it.

I had mine done a week ago; now I'm wondering, how will I know when they have "healed" (seeing as the rate is different for different people) ?

For me, the way to notice was to put some alcohol on the wholes. If it burned, even just a little, it was yet to be healed. It takes a month or so to be fully healed, but no matter how many years one has pierced ears, if we ever stop wearing earings it's just a matter of time before it closes.

Put small 'posts' in your ears (the ones with a little 'pearl' blob on the end are ideal) and paint the visible end with skin-coloured nail varnish. It helps to have longer hair, if you want to hide the piercings.

It's not really easy to hide pierced ears when you first have them done. As the other posters have said, you're looking at a minimum of six weeks before you should even think of taking out your piercing studs or rings.

I do think earrings on men are very much more accepted nowadays. I had mine done ten years ago. I was nervous at first about the pain (very little it turned out) and the reactions from people that I knew. These ranged from positive (mom, sister, friends) to neutral (dad and boss)- except for my grandmother, who wasn't keen on it at all).

I was apprehensive about getting it done so I had my sister go with me to the piercing shop as she had hers done long before - 4 in both ears!. She also gave me advice on cleaning the area around the new piercings, which is very important! Pierced ears are definitely worth it because you can wear any earrings you want and aren't limited to clip-ons.

    piercings

I envy those that get their ears pierced and don't have in ridicule/teasing from co workers. I have ten co workers and I know only two for sure would not say anything derogatory. I have had to endure months of teasing about letting my hair grow long (just below my neck). Even been told that they would hold me down and give me a haircut. I can imagine what my family would say.

Dylen, can I ask what industry you work in? Or what your age group is, or what part of the country this is? I'm guessing that could make a big difference.

[SIZE="3"]I have had both ears pierced for a couple of decades. Never been ridiculed about them, some comments about my long hair but not my ears. I concur with the others that say stay away from guns, instead go to a piercer or a salon that uses needles. It is easier to clean as the ear ring can be rotated through the hole as you clean each day.

I also have my navel pierced, I love putting different jewelry there and showing it off in short tank tops. Here's a photo of my Harley Davidson navel jewelry.

OK, I've had my right ear pierced now. I told my wife I'd get clip-on ear-rings but she thinks they look awful and insisted I get my right ear pierced.
Regarding what is written above: Avoid friendly fire, it causes unnecessary tension. Seek clarification if theres any hint of misunderstanding.

    Take care.

Why not have them done at the same time? Easier and most of the time also cheaper. I mean, if you already went all the way to get an earring, would it not be easier to have them both done?

I say go for it, I had my right ear done in August 2008 and another stud in my left ear. No comments from the general public what so ever.
My wife loves them, the kids think I look cool. The only comment was from a former work mate who said, "See, I told you, you were a girl", which was shrugged off with a laugh. (If only he knew):D

Had mine done three months ago. A few comments to start off with but nothing nasty. Now nobody comments. Its fine, doesn't hurt, so I recommend you just get them done. Getting earrings in now I find tricky. Need to get the knack!

It's been a work-week so far since I got mine both done, and not one person has commented. But I work alone in my office most of the time, and my hair does cover the earrings most of the time (but not 100% of the time.) I'm relatively sure that my boss must have seen them by now.

I haven't happened to have seen the person (security guard) I consider most likely to notice and comment.

I read this post from day one and it got me thinking. I had hoped for some clip-ons for Christmas but they are hard to come by here where I live so I was a bit dissaponited. My wife has wanted me to upgrade my wedding ring years but i have refused because I really like my old one. So I came up with a compromise after this post. I am getting my ears pierced instead and she is going to buy me nice diamond earrings when my ears have healed. Were both excited about this and are going to get them custom made by the jeweler that made her new Wedding ring set.

Thanks Donna, this is the best gift ever. I just needed my girlfriends to help me figure out what I wanted. I'll wear plain "manly" studs to work and when Josie comes out, well you know the rest.

    hugs all

    Josie
