Over the years I have seen a lot of posts where someone is concerned about what are neighbors or friends would say if we had nail polish on or our ears priced, etc. I am beginning to think that in today’s society and if in non-business situations, people do not care.
I push the envelope all the time as to what a guy can wear. For example, while on vacation this month, I never tried to present as female. No makeup, hip pads or breast forms and no skirts/dresses. However, the only male clothes I wear were my boxer shorts. (The wife likes them.) My sandals, shorts and tank tops were all from the women’s department. I also, had long dangling earrings and matching necklace. My toenails are bright pink, with a flower design and finger nails are long with sparkly red gel polish. I also have a feminine haircut.
Sometimes we were greeted as ladies, and sometimes not. In one restaurant the manager referred to me a Ma’am and the cashier said Sir. At another time, I carried on a conversation with another manager, who knows I am male, about our nail colors. I mentioned to her I liked her design. After talking about her nails, she then mentioned she loved how my red nails sparkled. At number of the boutique stores in Big Bear, they know us as a hetero couple (we are there a lot) and have no problems with me trying on ladies clothes and shoes. In fact they offer to help with finding items for both of us.
Also, since I telecommute every day, I basically dress the same at home. Over the past year, I have never had a negative comment from anyone, but have received complements on both my earrings and nail color.
So if you are concerned about what you neighbors and friends will say, don’t the chances are that they will just accept it in today’s society.
