Renee, you DO have a mirror right? I am NOT an prettier than you are my friend. When I travel or am just out and about, a LOT of people read me, and they read me long before I open my mouth so it's more than just the voice. That is kind of what I was saying though - you have to be able to accept and tolerate this if your going to fly.
I think that there is another concept that I'm not really sure how to put into words - I think of it as "plausible deniability". If you dress appropriately, and act appropriately, then you you give people plausible deniability to accept you as a woman. In other words, even if we aren't perfect (and I'm a long way from there) if you make an effort in your appearance and demeanor, people are probably going to accept you, even if to some of them it is just "playing along".
I LOVE chatting with the flight attendants! That is often the funnest part of my day. They often greet me with genuine smiles and have often gone out of their way to chat with me. I think that in the two years or so I've traveled dressed, I've only run in to one flight attendant who really seemed a bit bent out of shape about me. All of the others seem to think it is a welcome relief from the same old same old. :D
