I’ve heard about them and seen videos of something like that, except that the event was openly for crossdressers, not a subterfuge to diffuse social anxieties like you descibe them. Better with than without, I suppose. I've never done one, but would jump at the chance.
Has anyone told you you look a lot like Victoria Wood?
